Installing Windows XP

Hi,
My system is currently running with the UBUNTU operating system. Is it at all possible to install Windows XP instead, and if so what is the best way of going about it?
Mr. E G. Stagg.

Thanks, I would like to uninstall UBUNTO (But How?) and install Windows XP. Could you please explain the procedure?

    Mr. E. G. Stagg.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Yes, it is possible. Are you attempting to run WinXP in tandem with Ubuntu (eg. dual-booting)? Or just as a clean install (eg. removing Ubuntu completely and just using Windows XP)?

To do a clean xp install, follow these steps: 1. Retrieve a Windows XP install disk (Make sure it is a full install, not simply an upgrade) 2. Place the XP disk into the cd-rom drive and reboot. 3. When prompted to boot to cd, press enter. 4. The XP installation process will begin. 5. When it asks which partition XP should be installed on, select the current partitions and delete them. Then create a new partition as large as your hard disk. 6. Select this partition as the install partition by highlighting it and pressing enter. Do a NTFS format (not a quick format)
Remember, this will wipe your entire hard disk, so backup your essential files to a flash drive, cd, etc.
Alt. way to save files while install XP: 1. Download the SystemRescueCD and burn the iso to a cd. site:http://www.sysresccd.org/ 2. Boot up the computer to the SystemRescue CD. 3. Open GParted. 4. Shrink the Linux partition to the smallest size (Remove the free space) 5. Create a new FAT32 partition the size of the remainder of your harddisk. 6. Save the partition table to disk and restart your computer. 7. Copy all vital files from your current linux partition to the new FAT32 partition. 8. If not all of the files will fit, copy all of the files you can to the FAT32 partition, then delete them off of the linux partition. Boot back to the SysRescueCD and shrink the Linux partition. Then grow the FAT32 partion. Boot back to the Linux partition and repeat. 9. After all of the files are copied, follow the steps above until you reach the delete all partions. Delete all of the partitions except the new FAT32 partition you created. Then follow the rest of the steps.
I hope this helps!

My problem is in internet explorer 8 windows xp laptop gateway computer the restore down or maximize tab(the middle tab) on the upper right corner of windows dissappears and the page crashes and/or...

Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and therefore isn't secure. I'd recommend considering purchasing a new computer, as they start out in the $200-500 range.

Alternatively, you could look into using a modern Linux operating system, instead of Windows XP on your current computer. An easy to use, free distribution is called Ubuntu and can be downloaded from here. https://www.ubuntu.com/
NOTE: Before installing, back up your files and settings.

To solve your browser problem only, you might see if you can get an alternative browser. Here are a few, but I'm not sure if any are still able to run on Windows XP:

Mozilla Firefox Browser
Download Firefox Free Web Browser

Opera Browser
Opera browser The fast safe web browser Download free

Google Chrome Browser

Linux install problem

You are going to create a new partition for the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Apparently, you are trying to overlay Ubuntu over Vista and it's no going to happen.

Before installing the operating system, I suggest that you view the tutorial video clip by clicking on the link.

I had Windows 98 OS on my desktop and I wiped it out and installed Windows XP. My system performed better before I did this, how do I get rid of XP and reinstall Windows 98? I don't have the Windows 98 CD...

If you don't have the Windows 98 CDROM, or an image backup of your Windows 98 installation (if you don't know what an image is then you don't have one) then you're in a tough spot.

You can't just "go back" to your Windows98 machine, you will have to reinstall Windows 98 from a CDROM. So you will have to find a disc from someone/somewhere and hope it's the same version of 98 that your product key was for (if you have the product key). Or you can purchase a new copy of Windows 98SE. They cost around $55 from several websites (viosoftware.com for one).

On another note, if you computer is running slower with XP it's most likely due to the amount of RAM being low. Try to get at least 1GB of RAM in your current PC and you'll probably see XP run better. You could also try installing Ubuntu, it's a free operating system.

Presario desktop windows vista, shuts down unexpectedly

Windows Vista will not install on old computers. If this is your case try installing Windows XP, If this does not work you might want to try Linux (Ubuntu). which will run on almost any old computer with full capabilities.

USB mouse won't work under XP in a dual boot Ubuntu GRUB 1.5

It has the latest mouse driver (logitech setpoint 4.0). Before installing Ubuntu the setup worked w/ SUSE/XP using GRUB dual boot. After installing Ubuntu XP does not see the usb mouse. Even Logitech setpoint does not have the mouse setup/configuration option. It appears that at boot it does not recognize the mouse or disables it. The BIOS has the usb keyboard and mouse enabled. Currently, I have two mices one for xp and either mouse will work under Ubuntu.

Dual Booting

possibly by first creating a new partition large enough for Linux OS, but does not solve your problem...try getting a VISTA startup disc from another pc (floppies if you have the drive) and startup from these.
