install SigmaTel STA9220 Driver from support.dell.com

Go to dell.com, support, drivers and downloads, enter your model of service code located on your case. Find the audio driver and download directly onto your machine. Then just install.

checklist:
1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.

Get a detail list of each bit of harware and search the hardware manucfacture site of each driver EG your sound card is proberly STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio and go to the google and you will xp driver http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R114282.EXE
