Re:
Probably an issue with the usb port. I would try using the ones in the back, even though it's a pain.
This is the worst mp3 player ever invented - i have to tell you this up front. There is no driver, the company does not support the product anymore - I would return it now while you still can.
Either the device is bad, the pc port is bad, or the software is faulty. Try connecting to different usb port, then a usb port on a different pc with a compatible os. If still not recognized, then there is physical damage to player.
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

I'm in exactly the same situation. Found a download on apple's site for a shuffle restore, but it only works on xp. WTH?? I've also been searching the web for 2 days and have found no real solution to this problem, other than sending it in to apple.
You are supposed to transfer songs usin itunes....simple drag and drop doesnt work....
You can download itunes from www.apple.com\itunes
If you are already using itunes, perform a restore on the ipod using itunes...you will find restore option under the summary tab in itunes.
windows media player is not suppose and will not operate apples ipod.....go to www.apple.com and download itunes.....this will recognize your ipod and help you manage your songs....(once itunes is downloaded scan pc for music files).......you still can use window media player just not with ipod..you can either get tunes via itunes or (limewire, frostwire or bearshare)
Please restate your issue. If i understand it correctly you would like to recover your iPod shuffle is that correct... That wont be possible you can not recover an iPod shuffle do to it's settings.

Do you have the oportunity to try a different shuffle on your computer and see if it will charge? If it will, it's probably your shuffle that is the problem. If that is the case, check the contacts on your shuffle to make sure they are not damaged or dirty.
I have the same iPod myself, and although I've used it acouple of hours daily for a year, the batteries aren't supposed to (or at least they are not going to) last forever.
