Just plug it into your computer, it should install a driver and then you can go to 'My Computer' and click on the drive, it should be an F drive but it could be anything. An easy way to know which drive is the portable one is to go to 'My Computer' before you plug the other drive in, then you know which one is new.

be sure power is supplied to the HDD, if and inter HDD change the cables, if is external check the USB cable and see if you need a complementary power brick or a second USB to power it.

Hello,

If you are connecting this drive to your machine with firewire while you are trying to format it try connecting it to your machine with USB. If it formats okay that way you can connect it to your machine with firewire again after the formatting is complete.

Also make sure you have set the formatting process for the correct file system. For example FAT32 or NTFS.

Also, you did not mention which operating system you are using. For example a computer running Windows Millenium will not format many of these drives at all.
