Question about Archos Gmini XS 100 MP3 Player

It's not working!

Hi, My Gmini screen is frozen on the last screen you see when you turn it off. I can't turn it on, I can't play music... nothing! Any idea how to fix this, or to re-program and start again?

My gmini stopped working a couple of days ago (its 9 months old). Cant turn it on and when it does come on it goes off again within seconds. I have just visited a website after doing a search for customer services which has left me dismayed. Seems that hundreds of people have exactly the same problem... which would seem to me to mean faulty manufacturing.... pity the Archos MP3 player is a danger in anyway or else they would have been recalled to the shop by now and I would have a 100 euro MP3 that worked.

And no, pressing X to reboot doesnt help. Do you have an address where I can send it for free repair ?

Hold the X button for 10 seconds and it should re-boot itself.

Hi. I wonder if anyone has an idea how to fix

In fact the actual recording is of 12 seconds. Rest of the time shown is estimated time and the same is with the file size. Try running scandisk or chkdsk program. ([email protected])

If a reset does not work using the reset hole, then try this: First, back up all of your music and do this: Turn off the player and disconnect it from the computer. Then press and hold the play/puse button and turn it on simultaneously. The player should be in recovery mode. Scroll down and select format (all) and let it format. Then reload all of music back onto your player and it should work like new. Hope this helps!

Try turning the unit on with the hard drive disconnected. When I did this (mine had a similar problem) a screen came up and asked me if I wanted to format. I plugged the hard drive back in and reformatted. I had to format twice, but after that it worked fine.

Unit Frozen After battery replacement

I came up with a solution (finally!). Only try this if you have exhausted all other possibilities.

First, make sure the unit if turned off, remove the backplate, and set the battery aside, still connected. Peel back the gold foil where hard drive connects to the motherboard, and loosen the small silver plate at the other end, sliding it to the side. Remove the hard drive by sliding it off the pins. Turn the unit on, and you should get a screen that asks if you would like to reformat. Replace the hard drive, carefully, and quickly, and reformat.

I had to reformat twice, but I eventually got the thing working. I was almost ready to toss it, so any extended life I get is worth it. If nothing else, this should get you off the dreaded logo screen. Good luck!

Freezes on start up

If you have problems with the file system on your Gmini? 402 you can try to fix it using the DOS utility, check disk (chkdsk). Do the following; ? Make sure external AC adapter is powering the Gmini? 402. ? Quit all running applications. ? Properly connect the Gmini? 402 to your computer ? Wait patiently (up to 5 minutes) for Windows XP to show the local drive as mounted. ? Open a DOS window. Programs > Accessories > command Prompt. ? At the prompt, type chkdsk e: /f. Use e: or f: or whatever drive letter is representing your Gmini? 402. The /f argument tells the program to automatically fix errors. ? Be patient, this may take a while. ? When it is finished, exit the DOS Window and properly disconnect the Gmini? 402 from your computer. Try it now and see if makes any difference,
