Monitor is on, goes light to dark in 1 second

I switch monitor on, the light goes on for 1 second but then evrything goes dark. please help me. Thankyou

I have the same problem with my Dell 17" monitor. I've been reading and what others with similar problems say is that the power supply has a bad capacitor.
