The Lens Stuck in extended position on my kodak easyshare v-550
My kodak easyshare v-550 has its lens stuck extended and wont retract back to turn the camera on, every time i try to turn the camera on, all blue lights flash for about 5-6 seconds and then all lights out, the camera is still and no movement of any kind, tried to turn it on again with the on-off button on top, same symptom. I removed the battery from its compartment, and placed the camera on its charging dock, all blue lights come on flashing for 5-6 seconds and then all out, no movement of any kind, then i pushed the on-off button while the camera on charging dock, started to push all sorts of buttons and i discovered while pushing the shutter button the screen on the camera will display ''error L-83''. I have researched on the internet what is ''error L-83'' on this kodak easyshare v-550 but to no results. zero. could u pls assist me in this problem, wether its something i can handle or the camera will have to go to a proffesional technician. Thank u ladies and gentlemen. appreciate ur assist. right now the camera is off the dock charger and its battery removed.
Re: The Lens Stuck in extended position on my kodak...
Hi there, welcome to FixYa.
L-83 is a type of lens error. There are a few different types of errors with causes ranging from a broken gears (they're plastic), to sand or dirt getting in the gears preventing them from turning. So, here are a couple things you can do to fix this yourself before turning it in to shop for repair.
1) Get an air compressor and put the nozzle up to the space between the lens and the body of the camera and blow it out real good. Then turn the camera over (lens down) and tap the lens on a hard surface. You may have to do this a couple of times.
2) Press the power button on the camera, and while it's flashing it's lights, bang the side of the camera on the palm of your hand a couple of times. That may free the gear up.
If it's not something blocking the gears from turning, then it could be that the guide pins on the lens may be out of their tracks. If this happens, then the lens will not move at all.
Press the power button and grab the lens, give it a tug and a twist. Don't be afraid of it, you want to manuever those pins back into their tracks. You should hear a click when they fall back into place. If you hear the click, then stop pulling on it. Power it off and back on to see if the lens retracts.
If these three suggestions won't work for you, then you should turn it in for repair. Perhaps the teeth on the gears are getting stripped off, and it's pieces of the gear themselves that's getting trapped in the other gears.
Hope this helps you. Thanks for coming to FixYa.

I had a friend that ran into the same problem, but his solution is not what I would recommend but it did work for him. He used sewing machine oil and applied a tiny amount less than a drop to the crevice of the camera body and the outer lens housing, his was stuck in the retracted position, and he got it going again without a problem.
there's no problem in your battery maybe the lens unit. if you go to the beach or dusty place this past few days, for sure the said dust or sand it was go inside of lens unit .That cause of stuck up at not extend the lens properly. Possible also the impact or excessive force to the lens unit that's why the position of the gear inside was not allign. bring to service center
Hi there its a problem of lens guide pin. may its damaged or dislocated. Its a possiblety of company manufacturing default. So repair or replaced that. Its till under werranty. Thanks.
Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned. Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal. More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.
Here's what I did...Mine had the lens stuck out and would not power on. Just a green blinking for a second or two. Well, I tried twisting the lens ring closest to the camera while hitting the power button. It's kinda tricky to do...BUT, just keep at it. Mine was a $1 resale shop "find" and now it works. This worked for me. Maybe it will help you!
I have had the same issue were the lens would not retract. took it in for extended warranty work. lens now retracts but takes lousy pictures.
When I purchased this camera family members ran out and bought thiers shortly after I did. One by one the same issue has happend to their v1253's.
I dissmantled one and found that there is a tiny battery on the power board inside of the camera. apparently the tiny battery's life is about 1 1/2 years. This battery is not serviceable as it is welded in place. I am not one hundred percent sure if this is the cause but it makes sense.
It would be nice if kodak would own up to this issue and make good on repairs as they did with my kodak 5500 all-in-one printer and it's crappy print head. Kodak has sent me 4 print heads in the 2 years I have owned it.
I have 5 of the v1253's in my family and every one of the are dead. I would think a $250 product should last longer than 1 1/2 years.
hope this helps.
Try helping the camera to retract using your fingers while you turn camera off, try also helping lens to full extent if they don't.if you do not succeed in this simple way the camera lens must be taken apart and reassembled at a repair shop.
Try blowing lots of compressed air around the open lens shutter to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Also with the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. A grain of sand in the mechanism is usually the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it.
You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk, and it will void your warranty):
