You are on the right track, if the lamp is not lighting bright enough it could do this exact thing, the three tries is standard on RCA products, called the 3 strikes and your out---set will try 3 times to make it on and then shut down.

The color wheel while possible usually makes a high pitched fan like sound and with lamp out you should be able to see it to know if missing parts of the wheel or shattered.

you should take it to a tv repair shop to look it over, they charge $50 and they will tell you want the problem is.

Is the set completly dead...does the green light flash then go off. or when you plug it up does it come on for a moment?

the unit has a bad color wheel,a big pain in the ass to change.the part runs about 175.00 labor is about 200.Try first to get the manufacture to fix unit,be persistant
