Our TV for no reason will turn itself off but the red button will remain on and it will flash green occasionally. We have banged the TV box and turned it upside down which after a while will aloow the TV to come back on but the problem will re-occur.

Hi.
What you are discribing sounds like dry solder joints in the media box.
Because of the delicate circuitry in the box I would recomend you have media box looked at by a shop.
Your best bet is a small independent retailer rather than the big boys currys etc.
I have personally dealt with a company that repairs the boxes who advertise on Ebay UK.
They do A repair or exchange service for approx £90.00 all fully waranteed.
They fixed A techwood media box that was driving me crazy & since being repaired has caused no problems.

Your TV main board is damaged and you need a new one. You can order one on ebay and fix it yourself. Make sure you have the TV model/serial number on the back label of the TV to have the right part when ordering.
View your screen from a flat angle while on a known active channel to see if you can detect any 'ghosting' of images.
I think either the back-light or the high voltage supply for it has failed.
I have had this problem in some models of plasma sets before. In most cases the power supply and main drive boards had to be replaced. In a small number of cases the failure was the screen itself.
In all cases, the cost of the repair was expensive. For the screen failure, the set was scrapped.
