Garmin etrex legend cx (the grey one)

I recently tried to upload the Garmin City Navigator NT v7 software (most recent copy) and cannot use it. The message I get is "Can't Unlock Maps." I have the pass key and entered in correctly. Any ideas?

Call Garmin and they'll double-check the key you've entered with their system to see if it's correct. You might have just entered it wrong. The 25 digit code you enter is a combination of the software code and your unit code. If you gave the incorrect unit ID to the Garmin people, they would then have given you a key which would be incorrect.

Do you run the software with administrative rights? If you do, I have no suggestion...

Try updating your unit's internal software via the Garmin.com website. There was a new satellite launched which has caused problems such as this, and the update fixes it.

My garmin etrex legend Cx wasn't used for a few months and now won't aquire satellites. Batteries have been changed to no avail.
Go to the Garmin.com website and download updated drivers/software for the unit. Make sure the drivers are for your specific unit as they are all different.

Problem with display
Try updating the unit's software via the Garmin website. There was a satellite launched last year which was causing this problem, and updating the unit's software fixes this. Don't forget to come back and tell us if this fix worked for you.

Geocaching with Garmin Etrex Legend CX
The preloaded maps are VERY generic, mostly major highways. They are not useful for geocaching.

The good news is that you can download free topo maps created by a very generous Canadian soul, Dale Atkin. The maps are free but donations are accepted. He is also working on US topo maps. I've used Ibycus and Garmin topo maps and prefer the Ibycus version.

You can purchase the Bluechart Marine maps for your area online at Garmin.com. They will sell you an unlock code for a specific area.

Unlocking a Garmin etrex venture cx
The unit comes with a base map. You will need to purchase City Navigator software if you want more detailed maps which will show all roads. If the box contained a copy of the City Navigator and you threw away the code, you'll have to purchase another unlock code from Garmin.
