Hi,
I removed the old black and colour cartridges from the printer and now only want to load a black cartridge.
When I do the printer shows "E".
In Properties-Printing preferences-colour, I have selected black cartridge only, but with no change!
I have re inserted the cartridge and also reset the printer several times.
Any help or solutions would be greatly appreiciated.
Thanks in advance.

Does the printer give you any error message ? the best you can try on HP PSC 1350 is, Remove the cartridges and clean the electrical contacts ( golden points ) on the cartridge and put the cartridge back in. IT should go thru alignment process. IF it does not go, It should display some error. I hope the cartridges have ink in them.
Make sure you've got either 56 or 27 black and 57 or 28 colour cartridges. See here:

You "pop" them down then withdraw the old ones. Put the new ones in angled slightly upwards then click them up into place. The raised plastic on top of the cartridges will prevent installation into the wrong ports. If you're trying to put in a 58 photo cartridge it goes into the black port.
Inkjet printers use a combination of inks to produce colors; while you may not realize it, your printer uses black ink to print colors as well, to darken the hue of a color. Otherwise, it would be limited to very "bright" colors. Replace the black cartridge, you will be fine.
Method 1:Remove your colour cartridge wen you require only balck ink[The blue lines are often signs of empty cartridge]
Method 2: while printing select 'Use Black Ink Only'
Is the new black cartridge that you fitted made by HP?
If it is not I would try with a new HP cartridge, I would also try replacing the colour cartridge.
