Question about Philips 43PP9202 43" Rear Projection Television
A friend of mine is giving me a 43 inch rear projection Phillips T.V. I do not have the model number yet. He said it works but that the color towards the top of the screen doesn't look right, otherwise he said it works fine. He's getting rid of it because he is a hi-tech kind of guy who now has Plasma tvs and no use for servicing this one. Its been sitting in his garage. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be? I've been told that the color wheel and the projector bulb have to be replace periodically, is that true and can a handy man do the job? Any Idea on cost? Asking a lot, trying to save any unnecessary grief. Thanks Doug
There is no bulb or color wheel in a standard projection set. The standard projection set has convergence output IC's that correct the 3 colors around the edges of the picture. If one of these IC's burns out then one color may sag toward the center at the top. The defective convergence IC will have to be replaced and the convergence circuits realigned and that should be done by a qualified tech.

When I do a housecall for a set like yours I charge $150, but from what I read here I see other shops charging $300 to $400, which I do not really understand because the new convergence IC's cost about $10 each and a good tech can have it replaced and realigned within an hour ($400 an hour... without a medical degree???). Be sure to ask around to the shops in your area and see what they charge.

Thanks MikeNJ, I will definitly ask around. I will have the set this weekend and see it for myself. I'll also have the model number. The owner said it works well and is 5 years old...We'll see how free, free really is....
