Question about Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. Plasma HDTV

Plasma 'popped' So I've read everyone else's posts about our tvs popping & I called Zeinth to complain. I did purchase an extended warranty, but it's taking a week before anyone can come look at my tv from Best Buy & then most likely it'll take another week for a part to come in & yet another week for someone to repair it. I called & spoke w/a c.s. rep who was going to have me speak with a supervisor after he found NO problems with the Z50PX2D model??? He never called back, so I called & asked for a Jessica, (posted by someone on July 10th) & they didn't know who she was, so I spoke w/the orig. sup. & he didn't acknowledge there was a problem with this tv at all. He basically said everyone is lieing & 9x out of 10 that you're calling up after having the tv for 4 years after the warrenty is up & you're wanting it replaced or fixed. He basically said to wait & see what Best Buy says (which I'm not happy that it's taking a week either) and if it's going to take a week for them to get a part & fix it then I should call back & ask for Luis & he'll take care of it. I asked what he was going to do & he said he'll worry about that & I said I wasn't happy w/that answer & he said again to see what they'll say about it & he'll expedite the situation then. I got NO HELP FROM THEM WHATSOEVER! I'm extremely upset & disappointed. I just want them to acknowledge the problem & assure me that yes there was a defect & that it can be fixed and won't happen again.

Apparetnly when the repair guy called Zenith/LG, the guy knew right away what the problem was & they have to replace all of the boards. I don't know how many there are, but I'm thinking it's 4? That's pretty much everything that makes it work! Of course when I called to speak w/that supervisor again he wasn't there. How convenient. We'll see how long it takes to repair it once the parts are in.

Ours is two years old, and it popped - the screen is dim - you can still see picture, but it's very dim.

I guess this seems to be a trend. My Zenith has just done the same thing. "Popped" sound only. My TV is now 24 months old and I did not purchase the warranty. I purchased at Circuit City. Has anyone found the "true" problem that is causing this to happen? Any feedback appreciated.

  • PeteMon Nov 13, 2007

I am responding to my post of last week, Nov. 08/09, 2007. I had called Circuit City and they agreed to check TV free of charge (normally $99.00). They did their inspection and found that (2) boards had gone out and would be approx. $915.00 to fix. Even though I purchased TV 2 years ago and warranty had expired 1 year ago, I called Zenith and insisted that I speak with a supervisor. I finally did and spoke with the main manager in the office, (877) 543-8325 (bypasses the operators) and they have agreed to extend my warranty to cover the cost of the repairs. I suggest that all of you who are having problems with the retailer and Zenith, be persistant. Hopefully all of you have the same luck I have had (Thank Goodness!) Good Luck.

Mine is a P60W26P and it lasted 3 years 11 months. The screen is now black after it tries to start. It glows for just a second then nothing. Having a tech look at it this morning. Suspect from the previous posts that some boards will need replacing.

I have the same model and have good service for 23 months. Last night it "popped" and the picture went, sound was still good. Had an burnt electrical smell. Called Zenith/LG, Cat talked to the super and offered to extend the warantee for parts only. The TV service guys said that it was likely the "Y" board because that was where the smell was coming from. It will take a week for them to fix it for sure. Standing by.

Bought our set in 1/06 as an open box sale, went pop in 2/07. Had the extended warranty, and Circuit City was very helpful getting it repaired. It took 4 weeks, picked up and delieverd. Fixed once, popped again 2 weeks later. It went back and they replaced all the boards -- two weeks. But it's been working fine since. We were told that a bad batch of capacitors came out of a component plant around the time of manufacture, causing the problem. Plasma/LCD HDTVs are still eveolving technology, and you shouldn't drop a few thousand dollars on a unit without an extended warranty. It was an extra $400 well spent.

Went into the back and found the power supply (on right side in the center). Checked the voltages and they were missing. I disconnected the cables to the other boards that received power from the power supply board and the voltages now were present. By process of elimination, I found the 6871QRH0158 (Rught Top) board was causing the loss of power. Once removed, the other 5 segments on the screen worked. Ordered a replacement board $180 from LG (Zenith) and now all six screen segments work. Ready for Super Bowl!

Loud pop, black screen, Turned TV off unplugged, then restarted power light comes on for a couple seconds then turns red. TV is about 4 yrs. old.

That loud pop you heard was a capacitor on the power supply - if you have electronic experience - pull the rear panel and look for bulged/busted or leaking caps replace them if you have component level repair experience or replace the board if you do not - also dont kill yourself- tvs have enough voltage/amperage to kill humans.

Thanks,
Michael

I heard a pop sound from the back of the tv and then no picture but still had sound

You know this is pretty damn strange everyone is having this problem with this Plasma TV right around the same time... When I purchased mine it stated that it had 20,000 hours of life to it... Also, I purchased the extended warranty plan for and the company that supplied the warranty went out of business so now, I have a bad TV and was screwed out of more money buying the extended warranty

Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. HDTV

My Z50PX2D was just over 2 years old and well out of warranty when the “Pop/Blank Screen” problem struck. However, LG took great care for the situation.
I civilly called LG's customer service (very nice people… all of them). LG’s CS phone number is (877) 543-8325. After a few short phone calls (less than 5 minutes each) over 4 day period, they extended my warranty and it is currently being serviced ($0 out of my pocket).
Here are some tips on the working with LG on the “Pop” issue (this should reduce the number of phone calls needed):
- RULE #1… Be respectful to all of them, everyone I spoke to were extremely nice.
- Have the model number, serial number, date of purchase and original receipt (they will require it faxed) on hand.
- Call LG Customer Service (877) 543-8325
- They will ask how they can help: Tell them what happened to your TV and you want to see if they can extend your TV’s warranty for the “pop” problem.
- They will setup a case:
o Will ask for your information (name, address, phone, model, serial number, date of purchase)
o Will ask what the problem was (IE: watching TV, there was a loud pop from the TV and the screen went out). No need elaborate too much, they know this problem exists.
o Will ask for you to fax the receipt to their fax number (they will provide)
§ Note the case number, your name and phone number on the receipt before faxing.
- Before hanging up, ask them for the case number. This will make it easier for everyone when you call back.
- Give them about 24 hours before calling to verify they received the fax.
o If they have received the fax and applied the notes to the case, they should be able to let you know if they will extend the warranty on that call.
o If the fax was received but not yet added to the ‘Case’, give them one more day.
Hopefully you will have success in having your warranty extended.

LG RT-42P245V-Band of pink

The PDP (plasma) panel has gone bad and need to be replaced. This is not a user serviceable part and cost about 1/3 of buying a new unit plus the cost of labor for a two-man job. I would hope that this unit was purchased less than 1 year as warranty for parts and labor is 1 year. If not I do hope you purchased an extended warranty or paid it with a MasterCard (some MC card provider extends the warranty by another year). Cost of repair for flat screen TVs are high so it really a wise investment to purchase extended warranty. Fixya offers extended warranty on your future electronics purchase. Hope this helps.

MY Plasma Zenith TV went "POP"?

For those of you suffering with the loud POP and dead syndrome on this model the "guest" comments here are correct. The Y-Sustain, Z-Sustain and both the upper and lower Y-Drive boards are usually replaced at the same time to prevent any damage from taking out the Y-Sus and Z-Sus boards a second time. You might like to know that the original part numbers for both the Sustain boards have been changed since original manufacturing in an attempt to prevent this problem from happening again and these parts are NOT cheap.
Y-Sus - p/n# 6871QyH039B - $337.74
Z-Sus - p/n# 6871QzH044C - $244.68
Lower Y-Drive - p/n# 6871QdH089A - $132.48
Upper Y-Drive - p/n# 6871QdH088A - $132.48

Above prices do not include shipping or sales tax if applicable.
Unfortunately techs have little voice in trying to get the manufacturers to correct these problems before the warranty runs out - knowing that after warranty repairs are going to be met with quite some resistance when it's coming out of the consumer's pocket.
Also, for reference, I've done about half a dozen of these and all have been under some warranty or extended warranty. Labor was approximately 6.5 hours so you can plan to spend roughly $1400 - $1600 for this repair..
Thought maybe if I posted here it would help a few find the answers they were looking for..

Loud pop - no picture

Your X and Y circuit boards are bad. It might require the replacement of the power supply as well. This is not uncommon for LG/Zenith plasmas to have this issue. Not a do it yourself repair.
