Not reading sd card

I bought an acer e310 satnav with no memory card, fortunately it came with the map software on the original cd which I loaded onto an SDcard (4GB), however when inserted into the device it comes up with ''maps not found'', the map file is 280 MB, could it be too much memory, or for what other reason can't it find the map file, I have checked the card in my lap top and the files are there...advise please..

Sorted it..! An SD card of 512mb did the trick, apparently satnav devices cannot read memory cards of more than 1gb at most. Aquired an SD with 512mb uploaded the maps and it reads it fine. Thanks anyway..

Did you check what format the sat nav recognises before you down loaded the information on to the sd card.

Testimonial: "I loaded it from the original acer destinator cd that came with the satnav with the control panel for the computer and the maps, I've since learned that it (acer e310) won't read any card of more 512mb, absolute maximum 1gb, is this true..? Great they're like hens teeth. Ordered one today, so will try again on monday to upload the mapsonto the smaller card, was trying with a 4gb card."

Can we download European maps onto our Garmin 200W for travelling with motorhome

If you bought the satnav in the USA it won't work in Europe. If you bought it in Europe you can download the maps but the full map of Europe won't fit on it. You can fit Western Europe or add and remove countries as you need them. It's probably not a satisfactory solution when traveling with a motor home. You can put the map on an SD card but the nuvi 200W has problems reading maps from SD cards of 2 Gb or more. The map of Europe would take a 4 Gb card to hold it all.

You would probably be better to buy a cheap satnav of Europe. You can get them from http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/xx/617/xx/1914/23/criteresn.html?sSortInfo=Prix-ASC
if you want to buy on line or Halfords shops if you prefer to deal with someone face to face. Some of them cost less than €100 and would be near the same price as buying the map of Europe.

Or if you want a satnav that covers both the USA and Europe and will work in both the Garmin nuvi 1370 or the 2370 would do the job but costs a bit more.

I hope this answers your question.

How to update your Garmin Satnav maps

To update your garmin satnav map you must have your satnav registered. If it's already registered skip to paragraph 2 below.

1. To Register your Garmin Satnav
  • Connecty our satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
  • Select your country
  • Click on Register your garmin product
  • Follow the prompts
Note you will be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again anytime you want to update your maps

2. To update your maps

  • Connect your satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
  • Click on myGarmin and log in
  • Click on myMaps.
  • If there's an update available it will be shown beside the name of your map.
  • Click on Get Update and follow the prompts.
Note map files are large so you'll need a broadband connection to download them. If you don't have broadband you'll have an option to buy the update on DVD.

  1. If The Map Is Too Large To Install To Your Satnav
When you go to download the map by default it tries to download it to the satnav i.e. not the SD/Mini SD card. You need to change this. When the website recognises the satnav follow the prompts. It will give you 3 options for the download destination.
    • Download to satnav,
    • Download to Computer and Satnav or
    • Download to computer.
As the website is updated, from time to time, the method of selecting the download destination changes. Sometimes it shows up as a drop box with a drop-down arrow showing your satnav name. Click the drop-down arrow and select the option to download the map to your computer. Sometimes it shows the 3 options as text headings with tick boxes beside them and you get to tick the option you want. Whichever way it shows up select the option to download the map to your computer. This will install it on your computer's hard drive.

  2. After it's downloaded the map should begin to install automatically. (If not double click on it and it will). It should be allowed to install to your satnav first as Garmin will not allow it to install to your SD/Mini SD card unless it's first partly installed to the satnav. This is so they can ensure that it's installed to the correct satnav.

  3. To Install The Full Map To Your SD/Mini SD Card
To install the map to your SD/Mini SD card, insert the card into the card slot of your satnav and connect it to the computer. Click the windows start button on your computer. Then click the GARMIN progam and then MAPINSTALL. This runs the map installation program. When the install program finds your satnav and you get the option to install the map there again by default. Click on the drop-down arrow, where it shows your satnav as the destination, and select the drive letter of the SD/Mini SD card. This will be different to the drive letter for your satnav. The map will then be installed to your SD/Mini SD card.

  4. Problems With Older Nuvi Satnavs Reading Maps On 4 Gb Or Higher SD Cards
When you install a map to an SD card older nuvi satnavs can have difficulty getting the satnav to read it. It will install to it without problem but when you try to operate the satnav then it cannot load the map and will close down the satnav unless you remove the SD card. The reason for this is that 4 Gb and higher cards are SDHC which operate differently from SD. To solve this problem you should use a class 2 SDHC card, which is the slowest type available. You can identify the class by the small figure on the card. It will be either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. Before you install the map format the card as described below. Also use webinstaller to check that you have the latest version of operating software on your satnav.

  5. Format the SD card with "Panasonic SD Formatter" available from http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter20.html rather than the standard windows format function. Select the fast format option and be sure you have selected the drive letter of your SDHC card as it will format your hard drive or indeed your satnav just as easily if you select one of them by mistake.

  6. To update your software or check that you have the latest version, you can download webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27
Connect your satnav to the computer and run the program. It will search for any updates to your software.
Class 2 SDHC cards are harder to find in shops today as they are being replaced by the faster classes. They are however still easily available on ebay if you can't find one in the shops.

I am traveling ion europe and have purchased a set of european maps for my nuvi 1300. i need to transfer the maps from the sd card to the nuvi 1300

If you bought your satnav in the USA don't transfer the maps to your satnav. The USA version of the satnav won't work in Europe. If you bought the satnav in Europe you should only have to plug the SD card into the satnav for it to work.

I am trying to update garmin nuvi 250.I bought nu maps lifetime europe (2011.40) but device dose not have enough space for full coverage region.how much space is needed. If i buy a memory card for the...

The map takes approx 3 Gb of storage space so you need a 4 Gb memory card. When you download the map to your computer run it and install part of the map to your satnav. After this click the start button (bottom left of your computer screen) and find the menu folder "Garmin". In the Garmin folder you'll find "Mapinstall" With the memory card in your satnav, and the satnav connected to your computer run mapinstall being sure to select the memory card as the destination. (It will be by default your satnav not your memory card). When the installation is complete the satnav will automatically switch to the map on your memory card when needed. You'll find detailed instructions of how to prepare the memory card and install the map on it at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Bought life time map update for my nuvi 200W. download tells me I'm lacking 459MB. I took every thing off that I can think of and cleared my personal settings. still lacking 459MB. bought 8 GB sdnc...

The reason that the download is telling you that you're short of space when you have the memory card in is that it's trying to download to the satnav rather than the memory card. The solution to this problem is at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps There may be more information there than you need but everything you could need to ask about updating maps is there including how to get the map onto your memory card.
You will probably have problems getting the satnav to recognise the 8 Gb memory card. The smaller and slower the card is the better chance you have but unfortunately older satnavs like the 200w is hit and miss. I have got some of them to work with SD cards while others just will not.

Can i put software to use on water or boat

The answer is yes you can. However remember that your satnav is not waterproof so you must keep it dry. To buy maps for on the water go to www.garmin.com. Hold your mouse over maps and click on BUY MAPS. You'll have to fill in your satnav model, what continent you want to use it in and for WHAT ACTIVITY select ON THE WATER. The maps available for on the water will be shown and you can select which ever you want.

When you're downloading the map download to your computer and install to an SD card rather than to your satnav as you could overwrite the map already installed on your satnav. For details on how to do this go to http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps
This explains how to update your maps but also includes downloading to your computer and installing to an SD card.

NOTE: There can be problems with nuvi satnavs reading SD cards so I would advise you to try installing a map you already have to the card first and see how it goes. If you don't have a copy of your map on your computer and you have at sometime in the last few months updated your satnav
  • Log into myGarmin
  • Click on myMaps
  • When you see the map you have installed on the satnav click on DETAILS and it will take you to a page where you can download the map again for a certain length of time after you bought it.

I am trying to download the Mexico 2011 map and the download stops because it states I do not have enough space. They advised a 4 GB SD chip which I purchased and installed. The download still stops and it...

When you go to download the map by default it tries to download it to the satnav i.e. not the SD card. When the website recognises the satnav it shows it in a drop box with a drop-down arrow. Click the drop-down arrow and it should give you the option to download the map to your computer. Download it to the hard drive.

After it's downloaded it may begin the install automatically. If not click the START button on your computer and go to GARMIN. In the garmin menu click MAPINSTALL to begin the installation.

When the install program finds your satnav and you get the option to install the map there again click on the drop-down arrow and select the drive letter of the SD card. This will be different to the drive letter for your satnav. The map will then be installed to your SD card.

Before you begin to install to the SD card you should know that it can be very hard to get get the 200W, and other satnavs of the same age, to run the map from SD cards. It will install to it without problem but when you try to operate the satnav then it cannot load the map and will close down again unless you remove the SD card. I recently had this problem with a garmin nuvi 760 and contacted garmin about it. They told me the problem is that 4 Gb SD cards are SDHC which operate differently from SD. They said to get a class 2 SDHC card. (You can identify the class by the small figure on the card. It will be either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10). Before you install the map format the card. Also use webinstaller to check that you have the latest version of operating software on your satnav.

rather than the standard windows format function. Select the fast format option and be sure you have selected the drive letter of your SDHC card as it will format your hard drive just as easily if you select it by accident or your satnav.

To update your software you can download webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27
Connect your satnav to the computer and run the program. It will search for any updates to your software.
Class 2 SDHC cards are available on ebay if you can't find one in the shops.
After failing to get mine to work on a class 4 SDHC 4Gb card I followed their instructions and it worked for me. Hope it works for you too.

I would like to know if I can donload maps for europe and where i can get them

Go to www.garmin.com If you haven't registered your sat nav you'll have to do that first and connect the satnav to your computer. You'll have to buy the map I'm afraid as there are no free maps for garmin satnavs. The full map of Europe is around 4 Gigabytes and will not all fit on your satnav even if you replace your home map so I would suggest just buying a map of the area of europe you want e.g. western europe and install it on an SD card. You'll have to install some of the map onto the satnav before you can install the rest of it onto the SD card i.e. select one country, so be sure you have some free space on the satnav. It takes about 3 hours to install not to mention the time to download so maybe it'd be easier to just buy a satnav with a map of europe on it.

Can i download maps of germany, switzerland and france onto my Garmin Nuvi 255 now that it already has australia and nz on it

You can, but...

You'll need to load the mapping onto a removable memory card, as your device's memory isn't large enough. Adding a memory card with additional maps really slows the machine down, painfully so. Buying the European mapping pack isn't cheap: you can buy a brand new satnav with full European (including UK and Eire) mapping preinstalled for about the same price. Click here for a current example, but there are cheaper ones if you abandon Garmin in favour of Medion or other brands.

It works out even cheaper if you sell the old satnav to fund the purchase of the new one. When you need the Oz/NZ mapping again you can do the same thing again as by then your original unit will probably have out of date maps anyway.

Please take a moment to rate my answer.

I have an acer e300 and it is saying map not found how can i solve this

If you have loaded Destinator Console onto your PC from the original disc that contains the maps simply attach the SatNav to your PC and take the following steps
1. From "My Computer" identify the SatNav device from those listed in "Items with Removable Storage".
note. if your PC doesn't recognise the device try putting the memory card into a camera that you can connect to your PC.
2. Right hand click the relevant icon, and select "Format" from the drop down menu.
3. From Start Manu, All Programs - select Navigation (this will depend upon how you origianlly loaded Navigation) then select Destinator Console.
4. In the bottom right hand corner of the subsequent window there should be a box named "Target Device" - click "Change"
5. From the pop-up window select the device you have just connected. This device should now appear as the target device and it will show how much available space is on the disk.
6. Finally from the top left hand box named "Standard Maps" select - UK_Ireland-177.0 MB and click on Install/Remove Maps.
