Question about GE D52GW12 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
I had the same problem with GE TV. Sparks, smoke.. I found a gray box (4x2x2) in the left rear of the computer board (facing the back of the tv) marked with a 4 digit number 3682 (I think). the top corner of the box was charred. Is this an expensive replacement. I didn't see any recall on the GE site for this TV but this is truely a major fire hazard.
Please report these problems to the consumer product safety commision. I beleieve this common problem with large sparks and flames warrants a recall.

i agree with you about the fire hazard and i had many feedbacks about this tv, mostly conscious about fire hazard too.
i would suggest that in light of owning a high-def tv, it would be significantly appropriate to place this in a room with airconditioning as to diminish the heat this hdtv produces.
about the issue of the hdtv turning off, if you suspect the transformer and other parts to be the reason for the tv to malfunction, why not bring it to a certified service center which handles GE hdtv. i would say that it may be a pain but as to think of the outcome, it may be worth it.
hope this helps.
