This is the test to determine toner/drum or fuser issue.
Print a test page
When you hear the paper feed into the machine open the top to stop the machine
Remove the toner/drum cart.
You should be able to see the page with printing on it. (This is before the page hits the fuser)
If you can see the smudge or marks on the page the problem is most likely the cartridge but NOT the fuser.
If the page is clean the problem is most likely the fuser.

When I go to print or copy the machine makes a loud clicking noise and then says paper jam. Brother MFC - 8460 N

Hello,
The loud clicking noise is either the toner cartridge or the paper feed. If the jam occurs in the drum and toner cartridge then I recommend changing the toner.
If the paper is not being fed at all then you need to have the paper feed kit replaced.
Thanks,
Pat

My fax machine rarely gets used --maybe 20 times in 3 years i have bought 3 new toner cartridges because they seem to dry out,, i have removed and shaken it to get SOME ink out. Is it the drum , am i...

That really sux. No way should these cartridges fail unless they are totally out of toner.

A drum should last 12,000 prints.

Are they refills or Genuine Brother cartridges?

I would email Brother Tech Support on this issue.

Paper printing smearry after cartridge change

It's possible you don't have the cartridge properly seated and toner is not being evenly distributed. The other 2 main causes for your problem are:
  1. dirty corona wire
  2. dirty drum
Try cleaning the wire and the drum, then gently shake the toner cartridge from side to side to distribute the toner and re-install. Best of luck.

the unit that you install the toner cartridge into is actually the drum on this machine.

Paper not feeding

If there is no paper jammed inside the machine, then look at the "paper out" roller, this is the last roller in the paper path. I would suspect it is out of alignment.

Intellifax 2900

One of the most common causes of black lines on the 2800/2900's is the drum charge wire being contaminated. Remove the drum/toner unit from the machine, and look for a bluish/purple "slider thingy" on the unit. This can be slid back and forth from side to side of the print cartridge (on the 2800's it's on the underside of the unit... I'm not sure where it is on the 2900), and will clean the charge wire that causes a lot of black lines on the prints. Slide it back and forth 4 or 5 or 7 times or so, and then try printing something after your done. See if that helps.

Check Paper

Check paper can also sometimes mean a jam. Remove the drum unit from the machine and check for a piece of paper inside the machine.

Also with this machines feed path it can mean that a foreign object can fall down the back and obstruct the paper.
