Installing fonts as complex script in Microsoft word

I have been trying for some time to install Complex scripts (Thai fonts) on my computer that operates on Vista Business. I was able to install it successfully (in 'Control Panel'), but when I try to use the Thai fonts in Microsft Word, it automatically changes back to the default Thai font of 'Angsana' and wouldn't allow me to use the Thai fonts that I have installed. The fonts works well with English language but when I change it to Thai language, it automatically changes back to the default Thai font. When I check in Microsoft Word under the fonts option, I noticed that the fonts that was installed was not under the 'Complex Scripts' category. I suspect that for the Thai fonts to work, it needs to be in the 'Complex Scripts' category. I might be wrong, so any assistance with this problem would be much appreciated

You are correct in your assumptions on the fonts. I would suggest searching for "complex scripts" and choosing those you like preferrably in TrueType format for best performance try these and install by saving to your fonts folder.... http://www.fedu.uec.ac.jp/zzzthai/fonts.html

During a clean WinXP installation, the Arabic fonts are installed as part of what Microsoft calls
Complex Script fonts. (MS documentation.)

To add Arabic font support to WinXP follow these steps.

  5. Load the keyboard layouts:
    1. Click on the Start button.
    2. Click on Control Panel.
      • The Control Panel is directly accessible in the standard Start menu but it is inside Settings in the classic Start menu.
    3. Click on "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options."
    4. Select the "Add other languages" task.
      • Or click on "Regional and Language Options" and select the Languages tab.
    5. Check the "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages" option and click on the Apply button.
    6. Click Yes when you are asked to restart Windows.
    7. Go to "Add other languages" again and click on the Details button.
    8. Click on the Add button.
    9. Select Arabic in the drop-down list of input languages and select Arabic ASDF Eastern or Arabic ASDF Western in the drop-down list of keyboard layouts.
    10. Click OK as many times as you are prompted to and then close "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options."

For MS Office:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Move the pointer over Microsoft Office Tools in Programs and click on Microsoft Office Language Settings.

If this isn't the word Gujarati: ગુજરાતી, in Gujarati then your computer probably doesn't have a Gujarati Unicode font installed and you will have problems reading the Gujarati section of this site.
Following are instructions for getting Gujarati Unicode to display properly on various computer operating systems.
Microsoft Windows Microsoft Office 2000 and Microsoft Office XP If you have a copy of Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP, or Microsoft Publisher 2002, and Gujarati is not displaying properly then you should install the Arial Unicode MS font which is distributed by Microsoft with these products.
If you are unsure how to install Arial Unicode MS from CD then please consult the Microsoft Help and Support website - try searching for "Arial Unicode MS".
Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 are not distributed with Arial Unicode MS so you will need to install an alternative Gujarati font.
You can download the following free, open source Gujarati fonts from the Indictrans Project:
Padmaa Medium, Padmaa Bold
Once you have downloaded the font file you can install using the font utility in the Control Panel, alternatively just copy the .ttf files into your \windows\fonts\ directory. There are more detailed instructions on our installing fonts page.
