I recently changed the battery on my APC UPS. Now, when I connect the server (that is all that is connected to it) and switch it on it shows full battery charge (I charged it overnight). I hold the on button until it beeps, let it go and it switches on, then I presume it does a self test as it clicks then the "UPS filtering power" flashes green for a short while then goes off. The "Loads powered by Battery" light stays on all the time and is amber. After a short while it powers down the server.
I have tried to connect it to my computer to see if it works as I do not want to risk the server, and the exact same thing happens, and after a couple of hours the battery is discharged and switchs my computer off.
One thing did happen after I had initially charged it with no load, when I reconnected it to the mains the unit emitted a rapid clicking noise for a couple of seconds, I switched off immediately as it was not a nice sound, I checked the circuit breaker on the back, but it had not blown, I then switched it on again and it started as described above.
I have had this unit for just over 4 years with nary a problem, just the battery finally failed and needed to be replaced, and it was sent by Dell from whom I bought the unit originally.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andy
Yes I have read the instuction manual and if I do not hole it in it does not turn on. I have tried with varying lengths of time and nothing works until it beeps then it turns on. The little battery lights turn on first 2 then it shows the battery charge (4 in this case), also the UPS filtering power green light flashes for a short time before going out. Whilst this is going on the unit clicks once then beeps 3 times and the Loads powered by battery (orange) comes on.
The left hand side of the units lighting display stays mostly off, when I have my computer on (with screen) connected to the UPS the load bar graph sort of irregularily flashes two lights very slowly.
Does that help any?

Thanks Wayneard, I see what you are saying, but over the last couple of days I have left the unit to charge and tried to start it normally, but it doesn't want to start, maybe I am too impatient or is there a delay before it starts? Am a little confused by all this and APC's manual does very little to help.

Above shows that you are trying to Cold Start the UPS. That is only used when there is no utility power. It is running everything off the battery only. Try charging the battery again and this time try just pushing the ON button and releasing.
Just to make sure...Do you have 3 lights to the left of the On and Off buttons? The center one (sine wave) should be ON. This shows that the UPS is supplying utility voltage and not battery.
It is possible that the unit itself is bad, and it was not just the battery.Just to make sure...Do you have 3 lights to the left of the On and Off buttons? The center one (sine wave) should be ON. This shows that the UPS is supplying utility voltage and not battery.

Well your ups havin the the problem when it keep charging and dis charge... it could be the charger cct is having problem or it be could be the calibration.. my advise to u to ask the technician to check on your ups.. there nothing you can do if it the hardware is fualty...
You need to do UPS manufacturing calibration after the battery replacement. beacuse if you dont do this the UPS is till assuming that your battery is still an old one.
A UPS goes between the Power Socket and the PC equipment.
So ya can "Talk" to the UPS and change monitor settings. So do some don't depends wat ya want?
A "Smart" one is computer controlled, and most probably ya can "Talk" to it, the other is the "Vanilla" model, real plain.

APC.com have many here.
there are fuses inside that blow too.
not just the rear breaker.
fails with NO Loads cables connected at all?
1: batteries shorted or dead. short overload it .
there is a battery fuse, easy or hard to find ,easy on my loved
smt750C.
the true model of you UPS is not front stamps
but the rear label tells the truth.
2: turn it on with not batteries yet, some turn on with error light or on mine LCD hard text errors,. no bats.
3: that is about it besides bad PCB.
ES-700 those pan-cake UPS. sure.
batteries do fail for sure out of the blue. (plates inside can short)
out of the blue. or one cell goes dry and open and dead.
the battery fresh pulled will read 13.0vdc. (good UPS)
not 10
not 1, not 0
13.
or 12.8v min. rested 5 hours post charged.
the brain inside (firmware) is not very smart.
it see's any errors it does not like and turns off fast.
blink of eye fast . it can.
shorts , or battery seen shorted.
or blows fuse, deep inside on PCB
up to 400volts inside do not touch that with hands, lethal
are you on 240vac? we are 120v here.
waheed70, NO!!!! NO!!! NO!!! DO NOT EVEN THINK OF DOING THAT!!! You may cause catastrophic failure to not one but both APC ups units and will void any warranty you might have!!! If you are in need of longer run time on battery back-up, then start looking into buying an "ONLINE" ups system somewhere in the 5 to 10 kva range. Check out "chloride" systems and "powervar" and "toshiba" and "ONEAC" for info about "true online" battery back-up systems. Bye for now. 12fixlouie

With a 980watt load the run time is only 7 minutes on a brand new battery. If you have the system on full load your run time will be much less and it has likely damaged the battery. here is the APC web site page for your model. If you are running that much equipment I think you need either a bigger UPS or another 1500 and spread the load out.
It could be that the cable to the front-panel got damaged during the battery replacement. After all these years you would think APC would improve that aspect of their design. All I can suggest is inspecting the cable and where it connects to the front panel.
well for the service manual you are not able to get it only for the APC engineer to have it.. if you are talkin abt the user manaul you can try google to search it much easy to find... you can check if the led control panel the connetion to the mainboard it may be shorted it mean the cable harness may be explose or loose it... if not try to replace one led board... see if its work??
