I just got a "new" refurbished Janome Harmony 2049. It sewed fine at first, but after the first time I used the backwards switch, I could not get the machine to sew forward again. Any suggestions? Should I send it back or can I take it apart and fix it? Thanks!!!!!

Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

On most sewing machines there is a little lever that controls the direction that the fabric is drawn through the machine. The lever on yours must be in the 'reverse' position.
reach around the back of the head and see if it back there.

Make sure your stitch selector is set for straight stitch and not in one of the button hole settings.
