I have a 80GB maxtor external hard drive with a faulty power board. I have verified the required voltage coming into the board and tested for the output voltage that supplies power to the logic board and then the hard drive itself. The power board has a burnt up logic circuit on it and I would like to find a part # for the card in order to replace the card itself. There are no identifying part #'S on the board itself. Someone please help. Thanks, Pete

You might have better luck by looking on eBay (and/or Craigs List)
for 'MAXTOR' and '80GB' disk-drives.

Can I put in my PC Compaq Presario SR 1610NX a Hard drive Maxtor 40GB, 3.5 ? Thanks

Hi,
Desktop Specs Link Motherboard Specs Link
A. From the first link above, you already have a 80GB 7200rpm hard drive and a combo drive with no further details. you can only use two additional devices one 3.5 inch external and 5.25 inch external bays.
B. Assuming that two devices are already IDE devices, that will leave you two additional IDE and two SATA device.

1. Turn off your computer before plugging any additional device and proceed with cautuion.
2. Add the additional 40GB Maxtor IDE hard drive, you will have to mount the drive into the casing and put some screw to lock or use tool lesslock if its present. (Check the jumper if its a master or slave) if you have configured the 40GB drive as master and you're going to add additional IDE drive you have to put the jumper in slave header.
3. Now put the IDE cable to the hard drive and to the IDE2 of the mother board mount firmly. (you cannot mount the IDE cable if it is in the wrong position)
4. Next the four pin power from the power supply to the hard drive. (you cannot mount the power cable if it is in the wrong position)
5. Power On your computer and press Delete or F2 to access bios, proceed to the option boot priority select your Combo drive as first boot, next your 80GB Hard driver, press F10 save.
6. Power On your computer and check your 40GB hard drive through device manager.
7. Time to add your new hard drive through disk management, so you will be able to see your new drive from your computer. I forgot how WIN XP recognize new hard drives especially the fresh one.

Hopefully this information helps.
Feel free to ask, so I can clarify things.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a maxtor 120GB external hard drive but no power supply. How do I get a replacement? I tried a switchable power adapter from a local hardware shop and although I set the voltage to 12v it lights up...

Hi Dave.

The problem you are having is the adaptor you tried is the right voltage but not the correct ampage. You require a 12v dc adapter with a rating of at least 1-Amp. The switchable supply you purchased would be well under the required level, probably 400ma (milli-amp), in other words about half the needed amount. A cable modem power adapter would be sufficiant. If you have one, make sure it is the correct voltage and polarity, positive pole (+) usually the inner pin on the end of the connector. Hope this is of some help to you.

Do I need only one cord (usb) to connect to my laptop?

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Maxtor 3100 80GB External Hardrive clicking/humming sound.

This could be an issue with the circuit board.I am facing a similar problem & shown it for repairing. And facing issue in sourcing the IC. Seagate is giving support for maxtor after it has taken over. Data recovery is possible only if the circuit is working.

I have a maxtor one touch4 and tryin to conect to my bell 6131 hd reciever if formats fine reboots but will not see the drive just tells me to go the bell.ca/pvrmax page wich is pretty useless

Comparing the list of requirements, the ONLY questionable one is the requirement that the external drive does NOT have a sleep mode...
The Maxtor MIGHT have that and not be compatibleas a result. ALL the other requirements seem to be met assuming you are using the external power adapter on the Maxtor..

Power comes from the power supply. Check yellow and black and red and black. You need both 5v and 12v. Are you sure you have the jumper set correctly for the application? Master or single - master with slave present or some computers require CS (cable select)

MY external hard disk maxtor is not detected

Is this a new Maxtor external drive? It came with a CD. Run the utility.

If there is no data on it that you want to save, you can also blow away the partition and format it:
Right-click [My Computer]
[Manage]
[Disk Management]
Find your external Maxtor Disk inthe list and / or graph
Right-click on the disk and select either "Format" or "Delete Partition"
(try format first) Use "NTFS quick format"

If you delete the partition, then "Create Partition" and then format.
You can assign a drive letter or accept whatever it assignes (probably Drive D)
*done*
