Hp cm6040 no start

The 256mg ram chip has failed on the formatter board. The problem is displayed by the 3 led lights coming on and nothing else happens.

I have a Soyo P4VGA MB. When I purchased the board I made a huge mistake a nd installed only 256mg of DDR. Since then, I tryed to install a second stick of 256 DDR (same brand and specs) but the computer...

Take both ram sticks out and turn the PC on. If it makes no sound at all with the stick out this means you have a problem with the mother board. If it screams like a banshie the board should be okay. Try putting the new stick in the slot where the old one is and the old one in the other slot. It might read it that way, no guaranties this will work but it won't hurt. It is also possible you got a bad stick. It does happen.

Help to upgrade memory of Dell Dimension 8100

Im sure you mean 1GB of ram.

Upgrading ram is possibly the easiest upgrade to a pc.Firstly shut down the computer and remove the wall plug.

Remove the casing
Make sure you touch something metal away from the case before entering the chassis of the computer... anti static wristbands are good.

As soon as you open the case you will see the dimm slots where the ram goes.

You will find two plastic clips on each ram module, just pull these back to release the ram and insert the new ram.You may need to push firmly down to lock them in.The clips will auto lock.

Just be careful not to push to hard as to damage the mainboard.

Upgrading my Dell Dimension 1100 series computer

It's hard to say without your service tag to know what motherboard they installed, what type of ram you're using, etc.
You can access a lot of automated info by entering the service tag at Dell's site, available by clicking here
But you're going to be limited, at best, expecially by today's standards.
You might be better off getting a new system and installing your hard drive as a slave, if you're attached to some of what's installed there. You'd still have to have access to installation files for all your applications, though.

you need to make sure the ram is compatable, it looks like an old machine so chances are its using sdram pc100,
check the ram your trying to make sure its not pc133. let me know what each piece of ram has on its sticker

5 second beep/alarm

Hi krusty_623.

If this is new RAM, you might want to try removing the battery from the motherboard, resetting the CMOS (clears out all the old hardware settings) and putting the battery back in so that the motherboard redetects the RAM as if the setup was brand new. I've had the same problem only once on a RAM upgrade and it baffled me. Once I reset the CMOS the motherboard accepted the new RAM without any problems. I don't know if this will work for you, but it's a simple thing to try.

I think your monitor is dead you could send in for service but a second hand one would probably be cheaper.

Installing ram

You need to go into the bio and update the memory there and the Yellow ! will go away. Boot the PC, select the F8 key during post, go into the setting for Memory and accept the change and you should be good to go. Let me know //D
