jackperson, Might be internal problem with the units power supply (ac line in to DC conversion) having shutdown issues. You will need to do some reading in my fixya profile for a while and then you will know what to look for inside unit. If not into electronic repair stuff, skip the reading and trade-in unit for new, if current unit is 4, 5, 6 years old. 12fixlouie
UNINSTALL THE DISPLAY DRIVER FROM DEVICE MANAGER AND THEN RESTART THE SYS. AND IT SHOULD WORK AND IF NOT THEN YOUR VIDEO CARD INSIDE THE SYS. MIGHT HAVE GONE BAD. LET ME NOW WHAT HAPPEN SO THAT I CAN PROVIDE YOU WITH TEMPERORARY SOLUTION
Usually when an LCD display shuts off on it's own this can be a power supply issue. I would say if you checked all the connections you may want to contact the manufacturer. If it is only a few months old then you should be able to get it replaced under warranty.
Also, you may have an auto shut off feature enabled on the display itself. You may want to go through the display's menu to very that this is not the case.
Possibly a capacitor on the internal board for the monitor that will not stay energized to allow the backlight for the monitor to illuminate. Going to need a qualified technician with the tools and equipment to diagnose it first hand. If you are not sentimentally attached to the unit, you can pick 17" monitors up pretty cheap these days.
Repairing the DELL E171Fpc LCD Monitor with the complaint of display shutdown after few seconds (power LED still on) was not difficult. Normally when this type of problem happens, we would first suspect the inverter board, then the filter capacitors and lastly the main board.
A defective in one of the lamps and a faulty TL1451AC PWM IC or inverter ic may caused the display to shutdown as well. If the lamp is defective, it will send a feedback to pin 3 or 14 of TL1451AC IC and caused it to stop producing output signal thus the display just shut off once you switch it on.
