Convergence problem with Toshiba TV 42H83

Yesterday my near 4 yrs old Toshiba 42H83 rear projection HDTV started having convergence problem all of sudden. The adjustment with the remote can move the red cross vertically, but not horizontally, which is what I need. What's worse, the red color deviation varies in direction in different area. In the center, it is offset to the right, while in the right hand side of the screen, it is offset to the left. I would like to know if it is easy to fix the problem myself, a guy with some basic knowledge of electronoic only. Since the projection TV now is out of favor, it doesn't make sense to spend 300~500 bucks to ask a professional to fix it. Any advice will be appreciated.;

    I have the 42H83 and my convergence is all messed up. I have been searching
    forums to find a fix and I am hoping this is the place. I would rather
    fix it myself rather then pay someone. Looks like I need to replace
    both the convergence IC's. I just need to know where to buy them and
    where in the TV they are located. Any additional tips would also be helpful.

    I have the same problem a 42" Toshiba HD ready TV. However after replacing the ICs and one faulty cap the TV still has the same problem. One IC runs very hot. I checked all resisters and they are good. I don't know what else to check?

Your TV most likely has a Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together convergence repair kits for most models.

The kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, etc. Everything you will need to do the repair yourself.

There are companies out there that offer convergence replacement boards - they swap your board for a rebuilt board. All U have to do is swap out hte boards. This is more costly than repairing it yourself but cheaper than a repair shop. U can also sometimes find your board on ebay. John

There are 2 large black IC's called convergence outputs and one of them has failed. The IC's are usually the STK392-110's and a good rule is to go ahead and replace both IC's with the new updated and improved STK392-150's. If you have never replaced convergence IC's and realigned convergence circuits in projection TV's then have a qualified tech handle it for you. When I do a housecall for a set like that I charge $150, but shops in your area will vary so ask around.

Yesterday I notice my Toshiba 42H83 rear projection HDTV has a convergence problem. The Touch Focus (auto convergence) adjust the Red & Green ok, but the Blu lines only adjust vertically, no horizontal movement. Tried it in manual and got the samw results, no lateral adjustment. I seem to be have a problem simular to the person who can't adjust the Red; looking for advice. I have a old O-scope, DVM, temperature controlled Soldering station, solder ****** (spring loaded), clip leads and other stuff. It has been awhile since I've repaired a TV and this set's technology is a different animal. Advice or documentation would be appreciated, if it is a long drawn out repair, maybe I can use it as an excuse to go get a Plasma, thinking of the wife here.
