1720 Dell Laser printer Photoconductor Problem

Our 1720 Dell Laser printer is flashing to replace the drum. I did this with two different drums and it continues to flash. When printing a status page it shows the photoconductor is exhausted. Is this the same as the imaging drum? If it is, why am I still getting the exhausted message? Do I need to resent the printer? Thanks for your input!

I have replaced the Photo conductor, but I am still getting the "Replace drum" and "error" lights blinking.

  • apsparky Mar 30, 2009

replaced drum, followed instructions to reset...and light is still blinking. I downloaded latest firmware... light is still blinking. When I check the printer from my PC... it still says the drum is down to %6.

I replaced the drum a few weeks ago. It was working fine but now, the printer's giving me the same error light message. The toner is fine, the drum is pretty much new, but it refuses to work.

I did figure this out on my own. The key is to open the door to the printer cartridge area. Once I did that it worked fine.

Thank you thank you thank you. You solved my problem, and I did it all by myself following your instructions, no tech support, no computer savvy brother in law, no technically adept husband, just little old me with a little google and someone with similar experience. Thank you thank you. One problem down, I'm sure more will come up.

I finally figured it out (with Dell Tech Support's help)! When you replace the drum, you MUST reset the counter as well. All you have to do is:

1) Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer. Open the front door of the printer.

2) Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash. When the LEDs start to flash, release Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit.

3) Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit.

4) Wait till the printer completes the POST process. POST is complete when fan noise and rollers stops. After POST wait for 5 seconds

5) Press Cancel button 4 times slowly until the Toner Low LED is lit. This is the procedure resetting the counter.

6) Press and hold Continue until all LEDs begin to cycle in sequence, then release Continue. Now only the Toner Low LED will be lit.

7) Cycle the power of the printer (turn it off and then back on).

GOOD LUCK, EVERYONE!!!

I have changed the toner on my dell 1720 it's still not printing well do i have to change my drum

The drum (photoconductor) places the toner onto the page.
If the drum is damaged the print quality will definetly be compromised

Our printer is saying it has stopped because the photoconductor kit has reached the end of its useful life.

You need to replace. It is also called the drum unit.

A Lexmark printer E350d has a message "photocon". What does it need?

Photoconductor unit (drum unit).

These are available new and remanufactured on internet auction sites.

Note that the photoconductor unit is EXACTLY THE SAME (other than the label and part number) as the one for DELL 1720.

There should have been instructions with the replacment drum unit, for resetting the drum counter.

If not check your manual, or if you can't find it, download ot from Dell website

Dell 1720 flashinf replace drum- error.

I believe this message is occur because the laser printer drum needs to be replaced, not the toner cartridge.

These are two different things. The part is a DELL 310-8710 Drum Unit. Just google DELL 1720N drum and you should be able to find one.

Dell 1720 flashinf replace drum- error.

The second link was the helpful information. Also, to cut through all of that --

If you need to reset the counter:

1. Remove drum kit with toner

2. Make sure all print jobs are flushed otherwise whatever has been sent and not printed will come spewing out.

3. Hold down CANCEL Button until all lights flash through.

4. Slide the drum kit and toner properly into the Printer.

done.

Is my Dell 1700 Laser Printer photoconductor drum truly fried?

The drum collects used toner for apprx. 30,000 pages. After that, the printer recommends that it be changed to prevent used toner from spilling internally into the printer's mechanisms. The whole photoconducter/drum can be replaced. The new part from Dell is apprx. $50.00 US.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Printer_Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=310-8710#Overview

You might have reset the "counter" for the photoconducter. Ever  have a water  fillter with an electronic timer? You replace the filter, then you reset the timer? Perhaps you reset the timer without actually replacing the filter. So to speak. :)
The question you should ask yourself is: would I like to spend $30 - $60 [it's cheaper for refurbished parts- Google it] replacing the drum head on a 7 year old printer, or would I rather invest that in a new printer?

Dell 1700 laser printer has Low toner and error lights flashing

Leave the printer on. Open the front and hold down the cancel button until all the lights are flashing in sequence. Close the front while still holding the cancel with the lights flashing and then release the cancel button. This should reset it.

Thanks
