When going through the menu screen, I clicked an "off" option to "on." The screen read "FPA ON" seconds before the tv shut itself off. The TV turned off immediately and will not turn back on, but red light (displaying power) is still on. Is there a physical override on the computer, or do we have to do something through the TV?
The FPA (Front Panel Access) lock is on. This allows you to prevent kids from using the set when you are not there and disables the buttons on the front of the TV. The set should turn on with the remote only, and then you can go back into the menu and turn off the FPA, also called child lock.

What if you don't have a remote
You need to buy an RCA universal remote in order to turn your TV back on and access the FPA control. This is a conspiracy through RCA to make its consumers buy universal remotes.
I have universal remote but you need to turn on tv to program remote
