Pull cord on weedeater wont recoil

I have a Stihl FS 55. The pull cord will not recoil. I took it apart and rewound the cord. It would pull 2 or 3 times with partial recoil each time until the cord was completely uncoiled. Several attempts taking apart and rewinding ended in the same pull by pull less cord to pull with. I don't have a manual so I can't give you any part #'s.

Thanks,

Sounds like the spring is broken itself.there should be a hook at one end and a loop at the other end.the hook usualy breaks off but the spring looks good.replace the spring with part number..4140 190 0600 ....that is the stihl part number.let me know if this helped you...if not give me a quick mail and i'll try to help some more......

Hi wade come across this all the time m8 the spring is slipping or the pawl (little plastic part on the recoil drum) is worn open the recoil and take a look at where the spring is sitting in relation to the center shaft where the bolt goes through the rope spool either the bend in the spring slack or the spring catch in the center is not catching properly this means when the spring is under load it will slip when u try to pull the cord. you can either get a new spring or try and re bend the spring which only works if u can bend it without breaking the spring which happens more times than not. on the first pull of the recoil pull the cord till u can fell the engine giving resistance let the cord recoil and then pull this allows the shortest pull to start the engine, saving the recoil uncoiling if it is still not catching try the pawl a small white plastic part in the top of the rope spool if this wears out it can give the same problem but it should still recoil for u hope this helps

Stihl chainsaw MS460 Can't pull recoil

It could be the recoil is stuck. a couple of things to check. Take the clutch and chain cover off, remove the spark plug and manually try to turn the motor over by turning the clutch. If the motor/engine is not seized, take the pull start/recoil cover off and pull on the cord to see if it will work and that the cord returns back into the recoil automatically. Don't take the nut off the inside of recoil holding the cord spool on. If the engine is not seized, and the recoil now goes in and out by pulling the start cord handle reassemble and pull over the engine a few times. This a good time to check the spark plug is working, now put the spark plug back in and start the engine. It's a good time to clean the air filter as well while the chainsaw is mostly apart and clean all oily sawdust off the chainsaw in the crevices etc..

I replaced a coil on a stihl weedeater, fs 55 rc, and am having a problem with flooding. also I need the gap spec for the coil/mag

put a piece of paper between coil and magneto magnets, then tighten down. Just so it is not scraping or hitting when you pull it past the magnets . The flooding is because your possibly leaving the choke on to long . Only pull it a couple times, when choke is on. Then turn to half choke.

One day when i went to start up my stihl weed eater it wouldnt pull so i took the plastic peice off and ther is a spring maybe or something right next to the pull cord and it was not on anything i pulled...

first off what model of trimmer is it? an fs what? second, if you are talking about the recoil spring you will need to go to a STIHL dealer and order a new one. If it came off one end then that means it broke and needs to be replaced and if it isn't broken but now uncoiled replacing it will be easier then trying to rewind it and put it back together

Can't start new stihl weedeater fs 45

The Stihl FS45 has a particular way of getting started as do all the stihl products. We sell Stihl equipment in our store and service and repair them also. The normal starting procedure is to:
Be sure the switch is turned to the ON position which is the negitive sign (-). The (O) is the off position.
Press the primer bulb 3 times.
Move the choke lever to on.
Pull the starter cord three times only. If the engine fires, turn the choke to the off position and pull till it starts.
If the engine did not try to start during the first three pulls with the choke on, you must turn the choke off and pull till it starts.
Remember:Pulling more than three times with the choke switch on will flood the carburator on every stihl product thats on the market.
However, if the units still refuses to start, being its new and still under warrenty, return it to the repair shop that services Stihl products and they will repair it according to warrenty. All parts and labor should be honored at no cost to you. Please provide your receipt and serial number located on a silver tag located on the unit or the mechanic will get it off the unit when he works on it. Either way, it will most likely have to have a new carburator put on it. I hope this helps. Please comment back if this was helpful. Thanks; George

The pull cord on my poulan pro weedeater will not

You have a broken recoil spring. Dis-assemble (pull-off) the recoil housing and check for proper dog alingnment, broken spring, or something jammed between recoil sprocket and engine block.
