It is quite possible the magnesium capacitor next to the continium transformer needs replacement.

The problem is probably a shorted Z Sustain board located on the right side of the TV when viewed from the rear. The board sells for about $220.00. The pop sound comes from the speakers because the audio circuit is not properly muted before power down.
