I would try sending to another source. If the document goes threw the machine and you get a confirmation report saying it was sent, then it was sent. The person on the other end may be having trouble with their machine as well.

I think the LCD screen is going bad. I would try to unplug the machine leave the power off for about five minutes and plug back in and see if that works.
I had the same problem trying to send out faxes out using my Brother MFC 7340. I use a magic jack phone line. Page 106 of the user manual says if sending via VOIP phone line, you should press menu, then 2, 0, 1 to select "Basic (for VOIP) mode. Then press ok. Then press stop/exit. This cuts the modem speed down to 9600 bps and turns ECM off. Then retry to send the fax. I did that and can now send and receive faxes.
Try printing out a report. If the line is still there you need to use the wire cleaner on your print cartridge or if that doesn't work, replace the drum unit.
it will be under reports, you can set all faxes to do a report after a fax has been sent, ill keep the terminology easy as
Brother, canon, konica blah blah all uses different terminology for it, but there is a setting in reports for user that they can turn on, it like error reporting if a fax deosnt go it will print out a error report so same thing to do with copy report.

unplug machine, press and hold down the "stop/exit" key while pluggung back in. continue to hold the button down for 5 secs, then release. if machine returns to the regular date/time display, you should be alright. if not, then you'll have to call brother or an authorized service center. this is usually caused by a fax stuck in memory, which this procedure should clear.
