I am interested in buying the Leica Laser Locator to be used with a DGPS. However it seems that the Laser Locator has been discontinued by Leica. What alternatives are available that can measure distances upto at least 2000 meters? Please tell me which DGPS model would it be compatible with?
Leica locator with DGPS capabilities? Leica still manufactor advanced military systems under the Swiss brand name of Vectronix which is part of the Leica group. Are you after a laser locator or a rangefinder such as the discontinued 7x42 Geovid. The Geovid is still available but no longer has the electronic compass. The original never did connect to a DGPS PC only the Leica Vectronix Vector could. None of these models will locate a laser only use a laser to calculate distance. Current Geovids range to 1200 meters and the Vectronix 21 will range to 12 Kilometers. Unless you are a certified government customer the Vectronix 21 you will not be able to purchase. Newcon have models that allegedy exceed 2000 meters that are made in Russia and depending on the model can be had for a few thousand dollars. The Leica Geovid 8, 10 or 15 power can be had for around 2.5 thousand to 3 thousand dollars and is an excellent robust unit. It will not connect to a PC for GPS sync though.
DGPS stands for Differential Global Positioning System. DGPS
achieves enhanced accuracy since the reference and user receivers both
experience common errors that can be removed by the user. Position errors less
than 10 meters are typically realized.
