No matter how careful you may be, knocking a cup of coffee or spilling a glass of soda over your keyboard may happen. This does not, however, mean the end of your keyboard. If you act quickly, you may be able to fix your wet keyboard to avoid any corrosion of its electronic components or any short circuit which might render it unusable. By following a few recommendations, you should be able to fix your wet computer keyboard.
Unplug the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any corrosion or short circuit. If you spilled water over your laptop's keyboard, turn your computer off by clicking on "Shut Down" on "Turn Off" in the start menu, unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to remove most of the water from it. Take a hair dryer and set it to its lowest temperature setting. Use it to dry any water which might remain under your keyboard's keys. Wait at least 12 hours before plugging your keyboard into your computer again. If your computer is a laptop, wait 12 hours before turning it on again. For Other Liquids Disconnect the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any short circuit or corrosion. Turn your computer off by selecting "Shut Down" or "Turn Off" in the start menu, remove the battery and disconnect the power supply. Place paper towels on a table, turn the keyboard upside down and shake it over them to allow most of the liquid to fall down. Take a few clean paper towels and wipe the liquid off your keyboard's keys. To clean between the keys, you can also use cotton swabs with just a little bit of water. If the liquid which you spilled over your keyboard contained a high amount of sugar, such as soda or sugared coffee, you might have to remove some of your keyboard's keys to clean the surface under the keys with paper towels or swabs. You can do so by lifting them gently with a screwdriver or by using a key remover, which you can find in some IT stores. Wait at least 12 hours before using your keyboard again. If your computer is a laptop, wait the same length of time before turning it on again. Are you wanting to clean it? You can use a butter knife or a flat screw driver .to gently pry the keys off. Doe this while pc is off.. Take the knife and place it between the keys and gently lever down at and angle. The key will be a little resistant but will pop off. Sometimes a keyboard has a few keys such as the space bar the are held with little metal bar which can be annoying when placing the keys back in. When placing them back in you will hear a little snap. This just means it is in. No worries.
A key falling off of a keyboard might be an annoyance, but it is not a reason to buy a new keyboard. Regardless of which key falls off, it can be replaced fairly easily. Although the method of replacing typical letter keys is a little different than replacing the space bar, replacing either of these types of keys can be done in a few minutes.
Carefully pry the key from the keyboard next to the key that has fallen off. This key can easily be pried by sliding a flat-head screwdriver underneath it and popping the key out. Be careful to make sure the key retainer underneath the key stays in place, especially if the key retainer has also fallen off the key you are attempting to fix. Look closely at the key retainer underneath the key that was just removed. Notice there is a notch in each corner of the key designed to hold the key in place. Place the key retainer back into place if it has fallen off the key you are trying to fix. Make sure it is positioned exactly as the key retainer next to it is. Put the key on top of the key retainer. Use your index finger to firmly push straight down on the key to lock the key back into place. Do the same to the key that was taken off to view the other key retainer. b> Replacing the Space Bar b> Turn the space bar upside down and use a flat-head screwdriver to separate the retainer from the back of the space bar key. Place the retainer into its place on the keyboard. The retainer will hook into small hooks on the left and right sides. The small metal bar from the retainer should line the bottom of the area where the space bar will be placed. Put the space bar back into the place where it belongs. Spread the ring finger, middle finger and index finger across the space bar, and push firmly until the key snaps into place. Put the space bar key back in place and gently press on it with fingers until it snaps back in place.
There are multiple different designs for laptop keys - so the exact procedure may vary from one machine to another. A good source for instructional videos is:http://www.laptopkey.com/installation_guides.php#modnum
In your case, I would order and replace the existing keyboard, and keep the old keyboard for parts should a key come off in the future.
If you've never replaced a laptop keyboard before, the procedure isn't difficult, but you need to exercise extreme care when disconnecting/connecting the ribbon cable to the motherboard. If you break this connector, you'll end up having to replace the motherboard.
You can find replacement keyboards, and instructions, easily by typing in "Inspiron 1420 keyboard replacement" in Google.
Hi, "I suggest that you try reconfiguring the way the Keyboard functions. Click on the Start button, in the [Start Search Window] type: keyboards; the "Keyboard" will appear in the shortcut menu. Next, select to open, make all the changes to your specifications, "Apply and OK" all changes. After you are finished, Restart the Computer. If this helped; let me know by giving a "helpful rating," thanks.
You can easily fix your space bar. I fixed mine last month when my daughter pulled it out of the keyboard. I used this video tutorial guide to help install the space bar key back into place. Its really very simple. have a look: http://www.laptopkey.com/installation_guides.php
this could very well be your OS as much as your keyboard. Try another board for a few days and see if it still happens. IF not...you found your culprit. Replace the keyboard or look for updated drivers if they exist.
The space bar key is connected tothe keyboard a little bit differently then any other key. There is a metal retainer connectedto the space bar key (on some keyboard models). Separate the retainer from thespace bar key with a flathead screwdriver. Install the retainer back inplace as it shown on the picture. You have to engage the retainer with thesmall hooks on the keyboard. Put the space bar key back inplace and gently press on it with fingers until it snaps back in place. That’s it. The space bar key isinstalled back in place and should work as before. If you still cannot fix yourkeyboard, then you’ll have to find a new oneand replace it. Pleas rate my solution on fixya if you are done.
Hello! am Fabian,
problem. every time i press a letter another letter shows up the space bar ...
solution.
first, be show to check if any other key is down, if not, dust your keyboard/pad to make sure the keys are free. if you problem remains, its likely your keyboard may be moist. you have to dry it by opening/ exposing it internal circuitry's to a dry air for some hours then close it up and test. if this did not work, it means you will need to replace your keyboard/pad.
when drying do not expose to direct sun light. if you have to replace the keyboard/pad buy an exart from your system manufacturer if you can.
