My problem with garmin c510 deluxe not charging has been fixed
After I posted my question I continued looking through the site and found what the issue was. The fuse in the adaptor had fallen out. I found it, put it all back together and Voila! All better. Thanks for having this information available. Just wish I'd spent more time looking for the solution before asking my question.

I have experienced similar with my missus's Garmin. It appears that if you use a USB data cable (in car or mains), it doesn't let you use the device. However, if you use the supplied in-car power adapter, it allows you to continue to use it.
I cannot confirm this however, but give it a go.
