How to Stop Mold or A Stagnant Smell from Washing Machine.

If your washing machine is producing a stagnant smell which is tainting your clothes then this Tip is for you!

Secret ingredient: Ordinary Baking Soda.

First check to make sure that the machine is draining properly and ensure that the pump filter is clear of any debris. Check that the drainage pipes at the back of the machine are not kinked or obstructed in any way.

If the machine is a frontloader a common place for mold to build up is the rubber seal gasket around the door such as this one. Immediately you can see the nooks and crannies where mold can build up.

Mold is one of the most common causes of a stagnant odour.

Clean this out as well as you can with ordinary kitchen cleaner (avoid using bleach) then place a heaped cup of baking soda directly into the drum and run an empty hot/boil wash on a full cycle.

Baking soda has a cleaning and neutralising effect and will help remove any build up of mold or gunge within the machine. You may need to run two of these washes before you see a solid result.

Thereafter I recommend you run a monthly 'maintenance wash' with the baking soda to prevent the problem arising again.

It is highly recommended that the door of the machine is always left partially open between washes as this encourages ventilation and discourages any more mold from forming inside the machine.

Water will not drain from the washer after I run a load. I've run it a few times now to see if it will drain and it just stays stagnant. Help!!!!

check the tub to pump to drain for a blockage or kinked lines and the pump for lint, coins, etc. as a blockage will be sensed and pump wont start to drain the machine even in a static drain w/o the spin cycle
