My tom tom keeps looping on the start up menu

My tom tom xl europe keeps looping on the start up menu will only get as far as select voice, previously worked fine. . I have tried the reset but still no further - please help!

I to had this same problem. I just about pulled my hair out. The way I fixed mine was to use Tom Tom Home to operate the Tom Tom. It was able to get past the loop and finish the initial set up. I then unhooked it from the computer and it was working by itself.

    Your welcome! I had searched the internet for a solution and had found your post with the same problem. I never found a solution on the internet so I just tried different things. So after a couple of hours of messing with it I finally tried that and it worked. Later I was thinking of your post and I thought I would share my fix with you. I know how aggravated I was with it. Tom Tom technicians were no help on the phone.

My tom tom one xl seems to have gone back to set up mode so i go through the options but when i get to the option for choosing a voice it freezes and then returns to the begining of set up again i have...
One of the voices you added from the computer is corrupt. Plug the tomtom back in to the computer and remove the customer voices one by one till you find the one that is corrupt. If you can't do this using the tomtom app, reply and I will find out where the files are and tell you which ones to delete from the momory.

Hi there can someone tell me how to choose the langauge on the set. Ours eems to speak German and English would be preferred!!
Tap on the screen to bring the Main menu up -> Select 'Change Preference' - Tap Right scroll 'Bold Pointer' -> Change voice -> Select required Voice that is not Greyed out - > Test -> Select

(if you do not have a desired 'Voice', you can download some free ones to your GPS unit while connected to 'Tom Tom Home' facility and the internet.

TOm TOm XL 340s and it does not announce street names
hi, it wont announce street names if you have the human voice selected. you must use the computer generated voice du,b as it sounds, thats the way it is.

go tp the change voice option and select a computer generated voice and try again..it should prompt you that you have selected one or the other.

if this fails, let me know and i can give you something else to try

I am unable to download the computer voice. I have tried several times and when I check it on the road it still won`t say the street names. I have a tom tom One Xl S. I can see it downloading onto my tom...
i do not know if you have changed the voice on the preferences, if not on main menu 1 page tap change preferences,go to page 4 tap change voice, the computer voices will be 1st ,then tap the one you want then select ,

Tom Tom stuck in a loop
i had the problem that when selecting the voice, the device would freeze up then restart sending me to the beginning of the preferences. what i did to fix this is connect the device to my laptop and start tomtom home. on the third page select operate my device. this let me finish selecting the preference options through the computer. after that my gps came up.

Not speaking street names
To get your TomTom to speak street names, you will need to change the voice from a recorded voice to a computer voice. This can be done by:
  • Connect your TomTom to your computer
  • When the TomTom asks do you want to connect to the computer, choose Yes
  • Open the TomTom Home application
  • Click on the 'Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras, etc.' button
  • Click on the 'Voices' button
  • Click on the 'Computer Voices' button
You can now select a voice to install on the device.
Once you have installed a voice, change it by
  • Disconnect the TomTom from your computer
  • Turn on the TomTom
  • Touch the screen to bring up the menu
  • Touch 'Change Preferences'
  • Touch 'Voice Preferences'
  • Touch 'Change Voice'
  • Use the Left / Right arrows to navigate to the voice you just installed (Look for the word 'computer' in the upper right corner by the male/female option)
  • Touch the 'Select' button

Tomtom xl 330.s wont speek street names
Yes Nickarino is right.
When I switched on my new tom tom it gave me that option to speak street names and it vanished after selected a different voice. I checked all manuals and web references in Tom Tom - none of them list it.
Like Nick said - what you need to do is swtich the voice type to SAMANTHA and it will show the option "Read Street Names Loudly". I jumped on it and said yes ..!!!

Speaking the names of major streets
It will only tell you the names of the streets if you use the COMPUTER voice. The other voices will not announce street names. So go to your voice selection and pick the computer voice...either male or female.
