hi i had the same problem when trying to use memory stick have you installed the software that came with the device.
When you get that message cancel it as its not important when your device is plugged goto my computer and see if it is listed their.
If it is select it then it should be working.
If it is not listed then plug your device in the goto add hardware wizard and let the comp search for hardware devices when this has finished then scroll down the list untill you see your hardware device then select this and if you have disk tick box if not let the comp search the net for the correct software and settings.
Doing this solved the problem for me.
Let me know how you get on and if you need further assistance

As they say look in the control panel /system/Device Manager under the listing for PCMCIA Adapters. If the device listed is an O2 Micro controller or OZ6912, click "contact hp"

SOURCE: replace broken usb port on dell latitude laptop

You will have to take the machine apart somewhat, or at least to the point of being able to disconnect and remove the usb port. Here's a link to the D600 service manual download. It will guide you through the breakdown process.

No, it's not the only way, if you have an unused PCMCIA port in your notebook. The width of the PCMCIA port is about the height of a credit-card, and the height of that port is about the thickness of a few credit-cards.

Purchase a PCMCIA adapter that has two or three USB ports.
Insert the PCMCIA adapter into the slot,
and connect your USB device to one of the USB ports.

Where is the firewire port?

Confirm that the laptop has a PCMCIA card slot. If so, you can get a Firewire PCMCIA card and communicate at near bus speeds on the laptop. That will be a lot faster than the USB port. Almost any Firewire PCMCIA will work. Just make sure that slot is in your chassis.
