I had the same problem.
Managed to solve it by turning off "Use proxy server for your LAN" setting in Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.
Hope this helps.

I'm running XP Home SP3 with IE 6. Need to upgrade to later browser...7 or 8. Can I skip 7& go right to 8? Is this a good idea? My computer dates back to 2003?

It would be a good idea to upgrade from IE6 to IE8. There have been many security fixes and upgrades to IE since IE6 was released and even after IE7 too.

I would suggest upgrading to the latest version possible for your computer!

Verry slow enternet explorer that time i open it

You could have a slow internet connection, malware and spyware. Or need to clean your internet files to speed up your internet browser. Try downloading, installing and running ccleaner and spybot

Problem loading facebook homepage

We have the same problem. We refresh it and it comes back. May be a problem with IE8 since it is so new(it was not a beta for very long). You could try to go back to IE7 and see if that helps.

What are the latest features of IE 8 which make it better than IE 7?

First of all it's about performance. Internet Explorer is much faster than IE7. Also IE8 has IE7 web compatibility. IE8 has many scripting, memory management, networking and rendering engine improvements.

Also for web developers, IE8 has improved DOM (document object model), has developer tools option too.

Added ie 8 beta, uninstalled, ie will not start

basically your ie8 uninstallation is bad...try and see if you can get an ie8 uninstallation toolkit at microsoft.com to uninstall ie8 properly. Else, you might have to reinstall ie7 after uninstalling ie8.. this same problem persisted when micorosft released ie7 and i was supporting ie7 when released. so take my word. happens with all ie beta versions..
