My Canon Multipass F50 has "check printer" error and won't print. The ink cartridges will not move when you open the door (as if to replace). The cartridge unit only moves partially, which may be the problem, but I don't want to force it.
Thanks for offering a solution; unfortunately, it did not work. I found my book and it says that if the printhead does not move, it may be a paper jam or something like a paperclip stopping it; however, neither are the problem for me.

I have the same problem - my F50 wouldn't print this morning and has an error message, "check printer" - I can't find anything wrong - all connections are secure. When I open the lid to the ink cartridges, the print head (ink) won't move over like it should. My Canon Multipass F50 has "check printer" error #343, and won't print. The ink cartridges will not move when you open the door (as if to replace). The cartridge unit only moves partially, which may be the problem, but I don't want to force it. Also, there was a concern that the wast tank might be full, well it was replaced and still get error and wount allow me to anything.

If you are gentle you can manually move the print head to the middle by hand. You don;t want to force it or push very hard. There will be a bit of resistance but it should just move smoothly. You may find it works when the printer is unplugged.
When you power it back up after changing the cartridges it will return to the side and print normally.
I had a similar problem. Go to this page http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/29693 and try the codes they suggest to reset the count for the waste tanks. Good luck.
remove all cartridges leaving printhead intact. close cover, turn off turn on, let power up, error message should be gone. open cover, reinstall cartridges if you cleaned your print head like I did you'll probly eventually end up getting a new one anyway, due to the color variations but I can at least print text.
Did you remove the tab that covers the cartridge head where the ink comes out, if the drivers and software that you loaded on your pc work good and your printer shows under device MGR, then it is the printer itself,,most times you can not see how much ink in the cart,,,most are sealed,,,just try to put the cart in again and make sure it is locked in good,,try running the cleaning program with pc,,make sure the right cart is in the right spot, bl in one spot and color in a spot.
When you open the clamshell does the ink carriage slide back and forth with jamming?
If not then try getting some silicone grease and apply a very very thin line of it on the rail.
If it does then try making a copy, in the middle of the process, before the error, open it up and see if the ink carriage has even moved from "Home" position.
You might have a belt issue and this could be one of many things, stripped plastic gear, streatched belt...
