Re: black screen on opeing the camera
Can you still take photos?
Tell me this
If you cannot then it has suffered an internal failure and if it is more than a year old - a new camera may be more economic than paying for a repair.

Are you talking about the camera's LED screen, or your computer monitor screen? Anyway, the Olympus SP-800uz camera has 4:3 image sizes and widescreen 16:9. Just set your camera to the size you need to get your images shown fullscreen. An alternative is to use a graphic (or tool) program that is able to crop your images.
Install the drivers for your camera on to your computer. The software should be provided on CD. If you don't have the CD, you can download necessary drivers/software from the Olympus site. You can then connect your camera to your computer by the provided cable. If a dialog screen doesn't pop up go to My Computer and find your camera.
Another way to upload your pictures, would be to insert the memory card into your computer. Again a dialog box should open prompting you to upload images to computer. If that box doesn't appear find your card in My computer and right click on the images and drag them to your desktop/file folder.
Make sure the camera is on and pc is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have PC highlighted and select ok on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.
Most likely the shutter "curtain" (a few pieces looking like sheet metal just behind the mirror, designed to protect the camera CCD from dust and damage due to too much light) is not opening. This will require servicing by Olympus, since you will have to take the camera apart to be able to reach this camera part. Unfortunately, this may be a pretty expensive repair.
You do have a one year factory warranty from date of purchase - suggestion is to send it in for evaluation as it could be a problem with the chip inside the camera that controls image processing. It sounds like that chip may need to be replaced. You can call Olympus Customer Service at 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3 to discuss the repair process with them.
This camera does not have the capability to shoot images in black and white. What you need to do is to take the images in color, download them to computer and then use photo editing software to then be in black and white. Most software applications have that as an editing option.
