When unit turns on it always shows headphone and auto muting on the display but when I tune the receiver to an fm station I get not sound, is it trash or worth repairing as I only paid $10 for it???

The JVC RX-884VBK is a great machine, I had it for over 5 years and had no problem at all. I came across the (NO SOUND at all) and I believe it is an easy fix. Check the Front left, there are 2 keys marked 1 and 2 for SPEAKERS output, sometimes you don't notice that you connected the speakers to 1 and the 2 key is pressed. You could have both keys pressed and you will get the sound. I hope that helps.

I had the same problem. I had bad antennae connection. I re-did the antennae conection and it fixed it. HOpe this will work for you...
I have a J JVC RX-558V. The mute light is always on so it does not play sound. I can't find the key sequence on the front of the unit to disable Mute?

Fujitsu,
The above describes my same issue w/ my JVC RX-9010 receiver.
How do you determine if a transistor is bad? What equipment besides an analog multimeter would I need? I am out of work so replacing this is not an option. I can solder as well so if I can ID the transistor I gather I can repair this cheaply? Many Thanks!
