SOURCE: zoom lens problem
Most often these problems occur because of shocks received by the camera. The zoom mechanism in the lens assembly gets knocked out of place. Sometimes this happens just like that, without any clear reason. The lens assembly is a delicate mechanism if one small part gets out of the place it will damage or jam the whole mechanism. A service center can check for that. There is no way for the end user to proper realign the lens mechanism because it is sooo small. It requires specialised tools and hardware. Also, when you take the camera to a service, ask them an estimate of the repair, you will know if it is worth it. Repairs vary form a simple lens adjustment to the need of having the whole lens assembly replaced
