What OS are you using ? Did you install the drivers and the app for it ? Is your fingerprint reader enabled in BIOS ?

Microsoft fingerprint reader and windows 7

Users installing windows 7 on their pcs may have experienced a problem: it seems microsoft fingerprint reader is not compatible with windows 7 so and has been discontinued by microsoft. That means, no driver update. You can go on using your fingerprint reader simply clicking the link below and following the instructions. I used that trick several times and it always worked.

http://www.blogfeld.com/2009/10/microsoft-fingerprint-reader-windows-7.html

Want to install my Digital Persona fingerprint reader.

Unless it is plug and play (PnP) all software and drivers come on a CD with the hardware. you have not mentioned the brand and model. So, use the model and brand name to search for its drivers on the net.

Catastrophic Error when trying to register fingerprint

If you turn data execution prevention off (cntrl panel, system, performance steeings buton then the DEP tab) it will work.

It is better to add only the programs (.exe) from the BIN folder of your C:\Program Files\DigitalPersona\bin folders since DEP is a good security measure against many types of attacks.

The single fact that Microsoft keeps that bug around can be seen as "you will never get security with Big Brother". It is really ugly and, as an electronic engineer I think Microsoft Monopoily as somethiung to do with NSA CIA MOSSAD and wars.

I am sorry to say what my most honest intuition tells me :)

The red light is off and the reader is dead...

I've been using mine for about a year with no problems, try plugging it into a different USB port. Windows will probably reinstall the drivers and this will reset the fingerprint reader. If it doesn't come back on then, you're probably gonna need a new one. Also, check the system tray icon for the fingerprint reader. Hover your mouse over it. If it says that the reader is connected, chances are that red light just somehow isn't working. You could try taking the whole thing apart and looking at the red light to see if there's anything unusual around there.
