Brush bar will not spin, red light flashes, brush bar seems stuck but it is hair free. Is there a way to take out the brush bar completely, I think something is caught on the inside ends of the roller but can't get to it.
Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC28's brush bar. I've attached our video which shows the correct way to remove any obstructions and reset the machine, in case this is useful to you.
The brush bar isn't designed to be removable, and attempting to remove it may void any guarantee on your machine. If you would like some further help it may be best if you contact us directly - our experts will be happy to confirm if we're able to repair your machine under the terms of our 5-year guarantee. My problem was the brush bar bearings were stiff, and the bar wouldn't turn easily. I believe the machine senses the clutch is slipping, and it goes into failure mode where the lights flash and the clutch disengages. To repair, you must remove the brush roll, but it is constrained by the belt. So remove the vacuum hose to the the brush head, disconnect the surgical tubes, and remove wheels and axle. Pull the clip that holds the hook for the air diverter, then the cover over the clutch (working it around the hook). Now unplug the two wire connectors beside the clutch and set them out of your way. All this is to gain access to the clutch.
Using your finger, rotate to lead screw on the clutch motor to fully engage the clutch (The gear on the end will move towards the clutch body.) Remove the remaining screw holding the clutch down and unhook the other side. Remove the tiny sur-clip at the end of the clutch shaft (if you bend it during removal, bend it back, and much later during reassembly, push it over the tapered end of the shaft; dont try to squeeze it over the shaft groove.) and pull the white gear off the shaft. Turn the clutch over and remove the three screws, starting with the one that retains the tiny circuit board and slide it out of the way. The end of the body will come off with the motor belt and pully. Now push/pull the clutch shaft out through the brush belt, and recover the spring and pully flange that are left inside.
Now you can work on the brush roll. Remove the 7 screws holding down the roll height adjuster cover, and the roll height adjuster shaft. Work the ends of the brush roll up and down so you get an idea where the pivot points are hidden. Carefully slide a flat screwdriver blade between the clear plastic cover and the brush roll bearing housing, as close to the pivots as possible, one end of the roll at a time. Pull upwards on the brush roll with your fingers as you carefully work the screwdriver blade, and the ends of the roll will release from the cover.
With the brush roll removed, you might want to try replacing the roller bearings. But I was reluctant to try to pry the bearing housings off the ends of the roll in case they broke, since the inner race of the bearings appeared to be pressed onto the shaft. However I was able to free the bearings with light oil, and I injected new grease into the bearing using a hypodermic needle. Once the bearings turned freely, I reassembled everything (after two tries; that darned sur-clip) and everything works. My wife thinks I'm a hero.

If you've had the brush out to clean it you need to re-set the trip switch which is a red button at the right side of the brush simply press it in till it clicks.

You don't need to take it for repairs, I just corrected the same problem on the phone with a tech. Have the head on your lap, make sure the end nearest the little belt has the rounded side of the bar facing you. The squared off end faces towards the machine. Place your left hand pointy finger under the bar (the 2 inch bar next to the little belt) and lift up, while finessing the loose end of the bar into place, with the rounded part still facing you. Then it sort of snaps into place. Now, replace the face plate. In the upright mode, starting at the carpet dial, switch the dial back and forth between carpet and bare floor, ten times. (the tech actually referred to this as re-setting the vac. LOL) Plug the vac in, incline the hand, and start. It should work. It didn't for me the first time and made a horrible sound. That meant I had to go and repeat the process again, but lo and behold, IT WORKED! When in doubt, call the tech and don't let them get away from you; have them stay on the line until the problem is resolved.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.
Simply switch the machine off and stand it upright. Press the brush bar on/off switch once and then turn the machine back on.
When you release the machine into the vacuuming position, the brush bar should start to turn again.
If you still having problems, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Is the machine not turning on? There may be a push button circuit breaker on this machine but I doubt it. I have no personel experience with this specific device. Are you sure you have power going to the sweeper? All guards, filters and shields are in their proper place?
Let me know
