If the dispenser is broken and doesn't open or close properly the dispenser lever might need to be replacedIf the detergent dispenser cover is broken and the detergent dispenser doesn't work, the dispenser assembly should be replaced.
If the dispenser will not release the detergent the actuator connected between the wax motor and the dispenser might be broken. Check the wax motor actuator and replace it if necessary.

SOURCE: detergent dispenser doesnt open

The detergent cup can become clogged with old dried detergent that prevents it from opening at time. Sometimes just cleaning the cup takes care of the problem. The detergent cup opened by a bi-metal switch or a wax motor located inside your dishwasher door(behind the detergent cup). If cup's cleaning will not solve the problem, you should replace the bi-metal switch or the wax motor (depend which of them is used in your machine). Another option is just to place the detergent tablet on washer's bottom before starting its cycle. Good luck !

Try what my wife does. She uses the individually contained detergent/rinse bubble packs (tab packs). No messy granular detergent and easy to simply place inside the silverware basket. Your dishes should wash spotless, like ours. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"

SOURCE: detergent stays in the dispenser

Clean and dry your dispenser prior to filling with detergent.
Use only fresh detergent.
Do not place anything ie. cookie sheets, cutting boards in the path of the water obstructing the dispenser.
Do not allow anything to fall between the racks and stop the spray arms from turning.
Always turn the hot water on at the sink prior to starting you dishwasher they use less than 2 gallonsof water in the initial cycle and they require 120 deg f water. Unless you have hot water recirculation in your home.
If you have low water volume or low water pressure due to bad impellor or windings in circulation pump. The water volume or pressure will be insuficient to reach the dispenser.

SOURCE: Dishwasher 3 in 1 detergent tablet not dissolving.

I believe that the instructions for using these 3-in-1 tablets is to place it in the open dish detergent cup, rather than in the closable compartment, since the tablet needs to get doused by a lot of water in oder to fully dissolve and be effective in getting the dishes clean.

Since the tablets are designed to dissolve more slowly, they are able to be used for the entire range of washing cycles. If it's a constant problem and you don's have an open detergent cup below or next to your closed detergent dispenser, just toss it into the bottom of the dishwasher instead.

The reason that the tablet isn't getting dissolved fully is because the door is preventing the tablet from dropping all the way out and the door is shielding the tablet from quite a bit of water spray.

Another option is to take a look at your owners manual for the dishwasher and see if they recommend these all-in-one tablets versus regular powered detergent and liquid rinse aid.

Hope that helps and best regards!

Soap did not open

Check the way you're loading your dishwasher. Sometimes large plates or baking pans can block the door of the dispenser. The latch may unlock but because the door is blocked, the detergent can't get out. Once you open the main door, the dispenser door pops open and looks as if it has been in the fully opened position when it was actually held in place by that large utensil! Cutting boards are major blockers as well.

Detergent dispensers do not open automatically

Make sure that you are not placing large pieces in front of the dispensers. Baking sheets, large fry pans, casserole dishes can block the dispenser doors and when the machine prompts the doors to open by releasing the catch, the door cannot open because there's an object in the say. You can check to be sure the dispenser will open by partially closing the door and checking where the item is in relation to the door. If its about the same height as where the dispenser door is, you'll have to rearrange your load.
Hope this helps! If it does, please come back and rate my suggestion.

Hi

Dishwashers use Bi-Metal strip to allow the dispenser to open/close. This strip when heat up causes the soap door spring to open up the dispenser. If this strip is not heated doesn't allow the door to open. The strip may not be getting 120V or maybe disconnected. Newer (plastic liner) dishwashers use a wax motor to open the soap dispenser. The plunger inside the wax motor slowly moves and pushes the plunger and door open. And, if this wax motor doesn't receive 120 volts, then it'll not work. Please check the voltage to the wax motor/Bi-metal strip; also inspect the connections to these.

Hope this helps...

Dishwasher dispenser will not open. I've been using the detergent tablets and am wondering if I should be using a liquid or powder instead?

Try starting a cycle without using detergent at all. If the dispenser opens, you just need to use powder detergent because the tablets are too big for the dispenser. If it still doesn't work, replace the dispenser. Go to the link to see how to take the door apart and replace the dispenser.

Detergent door does not open, it completes cycle without using the detergent

    Hi,

  1. The most common problem with the detergent doors on KitchenAid dishwashers is that they either don't open during the cycle or open only halfway. Before looking into more complicated repairs, make sure that the door is able to open. Check the seal around the door and the door latch for soap- and food-related gunk, and scrub it off if present. Sometimes this can keep the detergent door from operating properly. Consider switching detergents, as some liquids and pouch-style dish detergents can gum up the detergent dispensers. Also, make sure that there is nothing blocking the detergent door when the dishwashermag-glass_10x10.gif is loaded. Because of the location of the detergent door, a large item such as a cookie sheet or a pan can prevent the door from opening. Run the dishwasher through a cycle without anything placed in front of the detergent dispenser and see if that solves the problem.
  2. Broken Timer
  3. KitchenAid dishwashersmag-glass_10x10.gif rely on an internal timer to complete the wash cycle properly. When this timer malfunctions, certain steps in the wash process (such as the release of soap from the detergent dispenser) can be interrupted. If the dishwasher detergent door is either not opening or appears to be opening late in the cycle, this is likely the mechanical culprit. A broken timer isn't something that's simple to replace without knowledge of dishwasher repair, so it's best to consult a professional if you suspect that this is the problem.
  4. Malfunctioning Door Components
  5. For the detergent door to function properly, all of its mechanical components must be in working order. Older dishwashers' detergent doors rely on a spring-loaded hinge to pop all the way open when the timer gives the signal. If the door doesn't swing all the way open instantly when it's manually released, the spring may need to be replaced for the dispenser to operate properly. If the particular model is newer and does not rely on a spring to open the door, chances are it either uses a wax motor or a bi-metal switch to release the detergent door at the appropriate time. If either of these components is dying, that can mean that the detergent dispenser will not operate properly.
thank you
