My laptop will freeze if it is left idle for to long. Programs will stop responding and then everthing stops, sometimes u wont even be able to move the cursor on the screen. when the prgrams start crashing, i cant even shut the computor down, i have to press and hold the power button. it also happens when i try to run virus scans and disk defragmentor, or if i play long media files from the computor.

To check RAM LEFT CLICK on the WINDOWS ICON on the desktop. Then RIGHT CLICK on COMPUTER and LEFT CLICK on PROPERTIES. The amount of RAM should be listed on the main page of the properties.

How many antiviruses do you have. Perform a clean boot and try again. Remove vaio entertainment platform. Run a diagnostic test on the Hard drive from VAIO CARE.
Common hardware problem. The correct solution is a replacement tracker pad and mouse, however you may be able to get the problem fixed by cleaning under the pad. Either way it requires taking the laptop apart.
I had the same problem , i was using a spanish date format.
I changed the date format to an english format (mm/dd/yyyy) and now all vaio programs work ok at start up and afterwards.
Possible clock timing of CPU is wrong. Is it two fan on this laptop? Maybe one is not functioning. Plus check your power supply if gives correct power!.. If none of this , it comes to the MB and possible a CAPS making problem. Need expert.

VAIO Update has been disabled. Start , all Programs, VAIO Update 3, VAIO Update Options , Reenable the checkboxes and you shouldn't get the message anymore. This program runs at startup to check for updates with SONY, pretty useless.

Okay that's good to know. Have you installed any new programs recently like just before this issue started happening?
Have you run WINDOWS UPDATES lately? This may be a Vista issue and not the computer. If so, sounds like it may be a virus. Try updates first though.
