I have the same trouble... i finally undid the screw that holds the cover, but not sure whether the spring is sprung or the clamp is loose..

If you feel confident opening the appliance (while disconnected from the mains of course!)
1. Check the internal cable between the bottom part of the unit and the top part. If this is damaged or tests to be open circuit, it will require replacing.
2. If the cable is OK, check the continuity on the heating element in the top half of the machine. If it is open circuit, then the element will require replacing.
You will have to use a screw extractor to remove the broken off pieces that are still in the grill. You have to drill a hole into the remaining bolts and then tap or screw in the screw extractor. Turn counterclockwise and they will come out. Home Depot may have the allen head screws that hold down the bar.
Follow Up From Postee: Determined that by simply removing the back cover (phillips Head Screw) that there is a brass clamp over the pivoting bar that has an alan head screw on either side. Simply tighten both sides and the lid will stay up. Done.
