I've unplugged printer-no change.
The Scan button behavior hasn't been set up on the computer. If you haven't installed the Full feature software, go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4231205& . Select your OS and then Next. Select the second option under Drivers.
If you installed the Windows OS basic driver, uninstall that driver and disconnect the data cable.
Once this software is installed, double-click on the HP Solutions Center. Try to scan once to find the best settings. Then in the Settings section of the software, you can set the Button destinations. Set the Scan-to button.
Now if the software is monitoring the printer, pressing the scan button will launch the HP Solution Center scan.
I hope this helps.

Many issues are caused when the HP All-in-One is connected to the computer using a USB cable before the HP All-in-One software is installed on the computer. If you connected the HP All-in-One to your computer before the software installation screen prompts you to do so, you must follow these steps: Troubleshooting common setup issues 1. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer. 2. Uninstall the software (if you have already installed it). 3. Restart your computer. 4. Turn off the HP All-in-One, wait one minute, then restart it. 5. Reinstall the HP All-in-One software. CAUTION: Do not connect the USB cable to the computer until prompted by the software installation screen.

That's because it's not a printer problem. The scan options are in your computer in the scanning software for your machine. Before you can scan you need to be connected to your computer with scan software running to tell it how to scan, what you're scanning, and where to send and save the image you scan.

Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.
