Shorted motor windings, can you move the turbine when turned on or does it feel like it is being held in place. WARNING!!! do not try with your hand, use a tool. Possible capacitor, but I would suspect motor to turn slowly.

Check your loacl yellow pages for an electric motor repair shop. They may find it is fixable but could at least tell you if it is salvagable or not. Some even carry replacement motors at costs lower than the pool stores.

Be sure you have connected the motor to the line leads correctly and that the motor is set for the proper line voltage.

A somewhat common problem is that most motors are dual voltage (can be ran on 115 or 230 volt) and come factory set for 230 volts. If you connect it to a 115 volt circuit it will run for a while and then overheat and shut off.

SOURCE: pool filter hums when turned on pump is not

Inside the back case on the motor you'll see a white piece with two copper colored arms that have two silver points that almost touch. If these are rusty I've found that the motor won't turn over
. A quick fix is to take some 600+ grit Aluminum oxide sandpaper and give each of those contact points a brisk sanding to remove any oxidation. This will help the points make a positive contact . Make sure while very obvious that the motor is unplugged first.
If your pump has been leaking water it could be that rust has formed on the inside and is preventing the motor from operating properly. Which requires more aggressive dis-assembly to diagnose.
You can take it to a motor repair shop if the above listed doesn't work.

SOURCE: motor feels bound and hard to turn...

If there is a capacitor on it, you could replace that. If there is no capacitor the starting switch is probably broken. If you are not used to working with electricity, either have someone qualified work on it or...BE CAREFUL!..God luck...Lee

SOURCE: am trying to open pool, motor hums but will not run

You could also have a bad starter capacitor, and that's a cheap fix. If you end up getting a new or used pump to replace it try to get the same kind so you can use some of the old pump for parts in the future.

1.5 hp 2 speed waterway pump only hums. Finished vacuuming and went to turn pump back on it hims and then trips breaker. Shaft moves freely, unable to start by turning with screwdriver. Capacitor?

Most likely the run capacitor yes. Some motors have 2 capacitors, some one, some a combined start/run capacitor.

Replace it with one the same or greater voltage, and the same capacitance.

I need to clean the fiter basketon my Waterway pump system. How do I keep from pouring out once I remove the filter cover?

You should have a valves on the hoses from the skimmer to the pump & the pump to the return.
If you don't have these valves then the pool is draining into the pump from the skimmer and/or return. If you do not have any valves block the skimmer and/or return port & isolate the pump so you have clean the basket.

NOTE don't forget to open the valves/ unblock the lines when you turn the pump back on so it does not burn out.

Pool pump does not turn on it just hums

If it hums and the impellor shaft is not turning, it's jammed and will trip the breaker after it over heats.
If the impellor shaft is turning, may have a broken impellor. After closing the inlet and oulet valves, I would take the pump cover off and check... Good luck...
