Losing Oil Pressure in Dodge Ram

Hello, I am suddenly, but briefly, losing oil pressure in my dodge ram pickup. As I am coming to a stop while driving, the oil pressure gauge suddenly falls down to 0, then the check gauge light comes on, but only for about 2 seconds before it rises sharply back to where it is supposed to be. What is the problem and how serious is this? Am I actually losing oil pressure or is there a problem with some kind of sensor? Thanks.

I have a 1999 dodge ram with a 5.9liter. Come to a stop and bam no pressure. Replaced sending unit twice. First after market, then mopar. Problem is still there. Replaced pump. Problem was still there. So I talked to tons of dodge mechanics, and this is the real problem. Who ever said that these engines are none for sludge is just reall really stupid. BOTTOM LINE ON THAT FACT. Sludge comes from neglect...

Dodges oil pump makes 8-10 Psi at idle. Always mechanically test that no MATTER what. But the sending unit needs 12-14 psi to read it. So what happens is the engine warms up, and the oil thins. Then you come to a stop, and rpms are low, and your not producing enough psi for the sending unit to read it. So your truck is fine. But if the chime is getting to you. Install a high volume pump. I returned the stock one, and got the high volume pump. I will bet if you change your oil every 3,000 miles you will not see sludge at all. If your dodge has high miles replace valve cover gaskets, becauce the high volume pump may cause the gaskets to leak. Whoever said ther none for sludge just has no love for a dodge, or is a moron mechanic that is stuck in his ways. High volume pump is the fix $85.00 plus pan gasket. If you have a 4x4 you can do it yourself. Drop the starter. Remove torque converter cover. With a 13mm socket with a variety of extentions, and removing a dozen bolts. Do it yourselfer will complete it in 4 hours....

These engines are bad for sludge build up. It causes the oil to drain slowly back into the pan. When stopping the oil is actually going towards the front of the oil pan and away from the oil pickup screen. This problem cannot correctly be fixed without tearing down the engine for a rebuild.

TO START INSTALL A MECHANICAL GAUGE, THAT WAY YOU CAN SEE IF YOU ARE REALLY LOSING OIL PRESSURE OR NOT. YOU CAN INSTALL IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SENDING UNIT,SO YOU HAVE BOTH . WATCH THE GAUGE WHILE DRIVING AND IDLING TO SEE IF THE MECHANICAL GAUGE ALSO SHOWS LOW PRESSURE. NORMALLY IF YOU LOSE OIL PRESSURE THE LIFTERS WILL START TO RATTLE

My 95Dakota sport 2.5L is spouting oil from the oil switch. My gusge was going crazy and oil light was coming on. I knew that I had a leak and tried to seal it up, not a good idea. Look for a leak down on the drivers side near the bottom side of block. You can check it from sliding beneath truck@ driver side door. Have a light available and jack stand the front end at least. Look for any leaks or lose wires/bolts/fittings

If it is a l swich leak, is will leak consistantly (drip or pour) while engine is on. Check your oil level first, you oil sensor may be faulty

I would start by replacing the oil pressure sensor. If you have a gauge to connect to the engine to verify actual oil pressure would be best.

clean or replace idle air control valve located on the throttle body, this is the valve that adjusts the ammount of air allowed into the engine to adjust fuel mixture. If you change it clean the throttle plate of all the carbon build up

1989 dodge ram 150 4/w drive pickup has no oil pressure showing on the gage, driving or sitting still.

You need to have a oil pressure guage hooked up to see if you have a bad guage, sending unit to the guage, or if your oil pressure is actually low. Any garage should be able to do this, if you can't get one.
