The fax machine is making an unbearably loud screeching sound

Hi Viv, you still use the ole fax machine eh?? Does it make the screeching sound when you pick up the phone? Do you have a separate fax line? Check your settings. If nothing else works try using emails to do your stuff..

This can occur if you receive a lot of faxes that may have a vertical block or a lot of text or pictures etc. in the same location on the page. The toner can be used in that particular area of the page and a white line results.

Remove the toner cartridge from the fax, keep it horizontal. Shake it side to side whilst keeping the cartridge horizontal. This redistributes the toner inside the cartridge. Replace the toner cartridge in the fax.

Fax machine just possibly needs a good cleaning.

Bad scanner block, sorry. Very expensive if you can find one.

Hi Bibi - Is this a regular land line? Is the fax machine supposed to answer if it's a fax but not answer if it's a phone call? Let me know exactly what your mothers' setup is please. It sounds to me like the fax is trying to answer all the calls and the screeching she hears is the fax machine try to handshake, or connect, with another fax machine. You've probably heard what that sounds like. Let me know the answers and if you can ask some people that called if they heard anything. Thanks.

Most likely the modem is bad in the fax machine.
But a make and model number would help.
Some have the fax boards seperate, some are incorporated in the processor board.
Also it could just need the software reloaded or updated.
If you have a digital line, the majority of fax machines today STILL require an analogue line.
But a make and model number would be very helpful.

Go to control panel and printers and faxes and right click on printer icon then hit printing preferences, go to maintenance and do head cleaning cyles and print nozzle check. if it comes out fine trash and reinstall driver
download driver from support.epson.com site after selecting the printer mdel on the lists

Assuming there's nothing in the manual that tells you how to stop it. Is there a hole where the sound comes from? Block it up with blu-tack or sticky tape. Regards
