Empty tape drive acts as if it has a tape in it.

After use, the drive lets the tape out part way. I had to physically remove the drive to release the tape. The two fingers that hold the tape are sticking out and the disk that winds the tape is also out, as if there were a tape in the drive. How can I get these to release so they will accept a tape? I am down to two usable drives out of five!

Sounds like you have a bad tape in you media set that is breaking your drives.

Check inside the flap of all media to make sure the tapes are OK before using any of them (yes on that library it will take ages to go through them all) but finding the bad tape/s will stop it ruining more drives.

The drives should be easy for a repair company to fix but not so easy for an end user.

I suggest sending them to www.tape-drive-repair.com a few at a time for them to fix and service for you. They are pretty good price wise and offer a long warranty on the drives too.

How do you manualy eject a stuck tape from a Quantum DLT VS80 external tape drive

Hello, if it has an eject button, press it quickly several times (can't remember the exact number; try 3 first, then 5, then 7)the reason being that on earlier DLT's the firmware would cause a drive reset which would, if there wasn't a detached leader or other physical problem, result in a tape unload.
p.s. do let me know how you get on!

Remove the empty color cartridge by pulling it straight up. Place the empty cartridge in the plastic bag and set aside for recycling.

I have hp surestore DLT1e drive. Tape cartridge stuck!

For that you can try to press and hold the eject buttonfor 30 seconds if the tape doesn't came out then reflash the drive firmware revision.
After all that is the issue persists you can try to:
manually remove the tape by removing the top cover
    Locate recessed thumb wheel
Rotate thumb wheel counter-clockwise until you feel resistance. Wheel may spring back when you release it. This is OK.
Locate hole in bottom of drive. Insert #10 Torx driver and rotate clockwise until tape ejects. If there is a lot of tape on the take up reel, this could take some time.
Rotate thumb wheel clockwise to eject the tape.

    Tape stuck in drive

you need to get to the underside of the tape drive itself, there is usually a manual tape release mechanism built in however it usually requires the user to wind the tape off off the spools until it is fully disengaged from the spool and then to unload the tape there are usually magnetic servos and lever arms that need to be moved to release the tape itself, without being able to see the drive myself I could not begin to explain further as each manufacturer's mechanism is different, however the tape release looks like a recessed screw on the underside.

it is possible that if you manage to rewind the tape using the manual release, that reconnecting the drive may allow the drive to eject the tape using the eject button on the front panel

Denon Dual Cassette Deck DRW-660 will not eject either tape. I put a tape in right side, played a bit, stopped, will not eject. I put another tape in left side, closed, cannot eject. Cannot eject either....

Some dual decks use a common drive belt. It may have become too slack (due to age) to drive mechanism. I am sure its time to change all belts in both decks. This will solve the problem
