These models often get broken loading parts in front of the pickup assembly. If you could take a good picture of the front of the mech, I may be able to identify what is broken.
I'm not sure if this will help, but when that happened to my CD player the solution was very simple. I removed the outter cover and took a Q-tip dampened with some alcohol and cleaned the little lens that reads the cd. It's a very common problem, and the fact that yours is 15 years old guarentees the lens is dirty. Some people trash their stero when It could've been good as new with just a Q-tip & little alcohol.
Could be dirty laser lens, dying laser, faulty component,
Due to the complexity of multi-disk changers, it may be best to have the device looked at.
You can try running a cleaning disk through it first, but from your post, it sounds like this unit may have multiple problems and need tested by a physical person.
lens is dirty ........clean the lens using the lens disk cleaner...........still problem continues the laser head is not picking up the disc...........need to replace laser assembly.......
